On a whim, I ordered a Hohner Rocket from Elderly Instruments -- just picked it up. It came in a big package with a "Diatonic Harmonica Selection Guide" on it. Sadly, it indicates that this harp is not for blues! Special 20's are not either! The Rocket is not for Folk, but the Special 20 is.
Are they nuts, or am I missing something? (Even if this is marketing BS as I suspect, it does not seem like smart marketing to discourage certain types of playing on certain harps -- with very little basis in fact as far as I can tell!) I've known that the "Blues Harp" was BS -- even the "Marine Band," but they have taken it to the level of having a BS matrix for the whole diatonic product line.

Like I said, unless I'm missing something - in which case, pardon me.

I'm sure it's just marketing, geared towards the non-harmonica player I would suppose. I would agree that this is more confusing than it is helpful. They even list the Blues Band as being good for blues. :)

I mistakenly avoided Marine Bands for years for lack interest in John Philip Sousa's tunes. Those were just a few more wasted years in a lifetime. You just can't believe everything you read.

I think the same thing every time I see that.
That makes no sense what so ever!
If your at a music store you can ask the guy that works there because if you have to ask that question then he probably knows more about it than you.
Also if you are ordering it online, my god there is so much info about harps that in five minutes research you can amass enough info to write a book.

It's like they said to the marketing dept. "Make some sh*t up."
(I guess I'm getting more like my dad as I get older -- he used to yell at the TV commercials "You take the public for a bunch of idiots!")

I am very sad to realize I now have to learn Japanese folk music since I prefer the Manji harp. Anybody got a Blues Band I can borrow next week?

The Rocket is for those employed by NASA dont ya know. For me the Rocket is a high priced Sp. 20 with a custom comb. Another marketing ploy. PS the new Sp. 20 has a new cover plate and it says " Progressive " oooooooooh.

I soak my Suzuki olive in a mixture of gin and dry vermouth. It's perfect for playing swinging Sinatra standards.

In Trossingen, Germany, a Cross Harp must only be played in second position.

People whine all the time about Pro Harps, but what do you expect - like the name says, they're not for amateurs!

I'm still looking for the Hammond B3 inside my Suzuki.

You can always tell a world dictator by the Folk Master in his pocket.
