Does this mean that anyone can edit anyone's posts? Because of course I didn't write anything below "That's not the way Sonny Rollins talks."

I just got an email from Adam. Astounding as it is, it does appear that it was Adam Gussow himself who edited my post without my permission.
But I just can't believe that. It's too crazy. It's insane. No, I refuse to believe that Adam Gussow did this.

I believe it. And I kinda wanted to believe you had written all the post against your name too, J. So point taken I guess, Adam.
Kind of a rough treatment of a forum member who really hadn't done much to deserve that sort of going over, IMHO. I guess you'd been sucked in by the original publication and felt a bit sensitive?

I still don't think it was Adam. Why would he deliver such a broadside to his credibility? Why would a clear-thinking responsible adult do such a weird thing?
Nope. I don't believe it was him, unless he's gone completely insane, which I really have to doubt.

The thread was specifically about the appropriation of someones voice through satire. I think that was the point- the New Yorker put words into Rollins' mouth, Jnorem didn't see the problem with that and I think Adam was just trying to make him walk a mile in Rollins' shoes, as it were. The posts immediately following I think were meant to be the tells. I guess there is always a worry with satire that someone will take it seriously and eat the baby.
That said, it was a unique moment where breaking one of our normal rules (not editing people's posts) was the only way to pull it off.
I hope there are no hard feelings. Milsson, while a lot of North Koreas puffery is outrageous enough to pass for satire, I don't think they ever wink at the camera. If you have a specific example of our North Korea-ificness let us know and we'll see if we can address it. (And keep in mind, we have no control over the IP block issues- they are as big a pain in the butt to us as they are you.

Honkin On Bobo's post was much more cutting than mine was. Why was his post not hacked?
So nacoran, just to be clear, you're defending Adam's action, hacking into my personal post, you think that was a perfectly ethical thing to do? I take it that you'd be fine with Adam doing that to one of your posts, or to anyone else's, correct?
You don't do that to anyone just because they don't agree with your opinion, you just don't.

jnorem, I'm not commenting on the right or wrong of it at all, that's above my paygrade, just trying to explain the point I think he was trying to make. The 'Gussow' posts right below it made it clear what he had done, I think (although I had the benefit of an email as well).
As for the Rollins article, I imagine most people reading it weren't familiar enough with his voice to spot it as a fake.
I went to school for journalism. For what it's worth, although I thought what he did was kind of funny, I wouldn't have done it, specifically for some reasons that have to do with rules that were drilled into our heads in journalism class. He made a point to immediately point out that he had done it, so I hope there is no harm no foul?
For the record, the software shows who edited something. It will say 'guest' if someone other than the original poster edits it. I think it might be possible to get around that, but it would be a real pain in the butt, actually, now that I think about it, that might be an exploit. I'm going to write an post to the hosts about that.
On the rare occasions I change a post I'll also add a note that explains what I did- I only ever do it if someone has put a broken link in that is causing page display problems, and then I just fix the HTML. One of the previous admins would delete posts, and that caused all sorts of disputes, which was exactly what he was trying to avoid. That was several years ago.
Again for the record, now basically we lock threads and may, on occasion, send warnings if someone crosses a line. It usually takes 3 strikes to get banned. This was a one time thing that was specifically because the discussion was about the appropriation of someone's voice. And now to go report the exploit I just figured out... :(
