I wonder if Muddy waters Album "Hard Again" - one of his best, was a metaphor of him getting his groin powers back?

Back in the day those guys were living lifestyles that we know full well today will quickly make an older man weak and limp in the Mojo area.

And they didn't have a pill to pop...]

So, it is highly possible that a lot of those guys back in the day as they were becoming Seniors were becoming impotent, and performing gigs that way. The show must go on :)

I remember reading somewhere that the album is titled Hard Again because Muddy thought the recording sessions kicked so much ass that it made his you-know-what "hard again".

Doesn't he also have a song called My Pencil Won't Write No More?

I can't imagine popping an erectile dysfunction product, and I really feel sorry for those who must. I just think that it is comical for a man to have to take a pill to get it up. For some reason I am of the opinion that blues men would not have a problem in that category.

As for "lifestyles that we know full well today will quickly make an older man weak and limp in the Mojo area", do you mean excessive drinking and drug use? Because I don't believe that constant sex causes a problem - quite the contrary.

Reminds me of the time when I was masturbating and just couldn't get an erection so I got some jumper leads, attached them to a car battery and then pinned the alligator clips to my testicles..... oops. Wrong forum.

Ray! Don't you know that a man is a fool if he admits that he masturbates, and a liar if he denies it?

@atty1chgo. There's lots of things in life that as you go along you couldn't ever imagine doing. One day if you truly want ' constant sex'
you may need one!

I have some questions about your set-up Ray. Do you use a 12V battery? Those looked like custom cables. Can we get them in Oz? Are the gold-plated alligator clips worth it?

My Grandfather was 55 when my father was born in 1922, the message he passed down was "use it or lose it"...:)

Best to give it a workout anyway you can....and often, I say no more, it works. Grandmum was 34.

This is a very sensitive discussion, I understand that everyone wants to crack jokes and try to make light of this very real dilemma that a lot of working blues men will be facing, have faced or are experiencing erectile dysfunction even now.

Do you believe a working/touring blues man could continue taking the stage and convincingly perform their act... if they were unable to engage in sexual intercourse in their private lives?

How important is a "Strong Libido" to a working bluesman - is it essential for a great stage performance to take place?

Jimi makes love to his Fender stack at about the six minute mark, then his guitar (and or crowd), which he then proceeds to torch.

Jimi had libido to spare.

PS: had a joke in answer to franks question above, posted it....twice. disappeared.....twice. Maybe the spam filter doesn't like blue humor. Or maybe the joke wasn't funny. dunno but i know this.......... that spam filter blows

This is the stupidest fucking thread I've ever come across. What the hell is the matter with you, Frank?

And atty1chgo: Yours is the most ignorant post I've ever come across. Not just finding it comical that some guys need to take meds for erectile disfunction, which is ignorant enough, but also that "blues men would not have a problem in that category."

I've never taken a Viagra in my life, but I guarantee you that if I ever come to find that Abe Lincoln doesn't work anymore, give me the goddamn pills!

Its an interesting thread in that Viagra uses blues in their commercials.
Not sure how taking a pill to get it up is different than any other medical condition. If the pill works for you - use it.
Of course Willie Nelson , who is a great blues singer, said upon reaching his 80th birthday " I cant believe I outlived my dick"
He still has plenty of stage mojo

I hear they give some old men in retirement homes Viagra to keep them from rolling out of the bed

Kinda Bluesy and maybe a metaphor

A dumb harp man read a review of his playing a critic who was not too impressed, referring to the solos as the "...work of an impotent harmonica player." This struck the dumb harp man deeply and showed up at the next gig in a tuxedo.

"Why are you in a tuxedo?" asked the bemused guitarist.
"Well" said the dumb harp man, " I got called an an impotent harmonica player in tht review. If I'm gonna be impotent, I wanna look impotent..."

Hello Frank and those who have responded to this thread. The best part of the thread, for me, was seeing one of my favorite Sonny Boy Williamson songs posted. Simple playing and singing, full of feeling.

I shan't email you personally. No hostility here, but some of your latest topics are far removed from what this forum is about.

Cheers,

Enter threads with kindness and an open heart and mind - concentrate on the topics not the person and you'll do fine, if your mad, just go away...If a topic befuddles you, just go away - if you decide to think some about certain issues before angrily rushing in - you may find something interesting to contribute to threads that you personally don't like...Share your opinion intelligently and some one might listen, but to just decry " i hate these kind of threads" is not saying much it's merely a cheap opinion...This is a deep and important topic and deals with "the blues" - If one can't understand that, that's on you. Move on to your happy place somewhere else, no point in gettin mad bro... You can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all the time, Honest Abe :) and as groyster1 so elegantly stated, life is a bitch and you die.....deal with it!

Does anyone have Rices song "too old to think" ?

Lifes a bitch .. then you die .. hopefully you don't marry one in the process ! ! .. that'll keep you from getting it up ....

I don't know what those guy's personal problems were , my guess, many more problems in the financial area ..
I'd also guess , for most .. getting it up for most , wasn't one of them ... why .. lot's of stories of older bluesmen with younger women .. you figure it out .. that shouldn't be too hard hehe : )

jnorem - this whole string of discussion quite stupid. When I stated in another string that Frank's topics had entered the realm of dick measuring contests, I had no idea that he would actually talk about it literally. But it is summertime after all. The mind wanders with all of the sun and heat.

Apparently it appears that your fragile psychosis would endure a tremendous toll if you could not get it up. I simply do not share this burden.

My sympathies.

Rick is something else in the teaching video he made- every other scene he is getting laid by midgets, fat mamas, hoe's you name it...he just whispers in their ear and it's all over - he takes em to the basement, behind the bar, in the bathroom and has his way with em...Very entertaining to say the least, what a showman, guess he has more then harmonica to teach :)

I believe Kim Wilson sez - blues is played below the belt!

What do you say?

@ Frank - that is what is great about the freedom to speak freely. That being said, it's a really useless thread. I think I will take your advice in the future when new dumb stuff gets posted. I was hoping that by calling its stupidity out, that you might just control yourself in future posts. That was the whole purpose of my comments, but I'm afraid it's probably a lost cause.

@ Ted Burke - I am far from PC, but I have the sense that your joke might be perceived as a tad on the racist side, even though no ethnicity has been spotlighted.

I realize that we've entered the dog days of August, but this thread is borderline OT and should have been marked semi-OT. Several of you who are otherwise good citizens are trampling pretty heavy on the requirement that we treat fellow forum members with respect, even when we disagree with the things they're saying. Please tone it down.

Frank, when you first appeared on this forum, your threads and posts were sometimes marked by a degree of surrealism that alarmed me. I said nothing--at least not here, in the front of the house--and you've become a good forum citizen. At this point, in fact, I believe you've contributed more posts than any other member, including me. You are part of what makes this forum lively on a daily basis, and I trust that we all respect that. But with the freedom to post in an unlimited daily way comes a certain responsibility to use The Force for good. Wisdom suggests, at least to me, that continuing a thread devoted to impotence and masturbation among blues players might not be a good idea, especially given all the negative feelings it's generated. I'd rather not have lock this thread, but I most certainly will, just to keep a modicum of peace on the reservation.

The thread can be interpreted civilly - and used to learn...If some would simply mind their own business, things would be fine...why not stay away from threads that you don't like and let others converse without being constantly interrupted with name calling etc. :)

When a tree falls in the woods
Someone's got to sing the blues
And all it matters is
The metaphors you choose

Yeah my mojo's broken
And it's really got me down
No more nights out drinking
No more painting the town

But some witchdoctors
Telling me they got the cure
I ain't no potion man
So I guess I'll demur

When a tree falls in the woods
Someone's got to sing the blues
And all that matters is
The metaphors you choose

Yeah, I can't get my stick shift
Up much past second gear
My wheels are spinning
And I got this creeping fear

But I took it in to the shop
And I got it all repaired
The new parts weren't cheap
But that's no reason to despair

When a tree falls in the woods
Someone's got to sing the blues
And all that matters is
Now it's not me, it' you

I think blues is supposed to be an 'authentic' form. It's not manufactured teeny bop. It should be about what's going on in your life. One of the dangers of a stage persona is we can be so devoted to it that we won't laugh at ourselves, which is a shame, because when you shut off self-mockery you lose a great tool in your arsenal (which I guess is what this thread is about!)

Frank, I hope you don't mind me threadjacking this a little, but we all get old, and it's not just your mojo that's got mojo. We are lucky to play an instrument that doesn't get as affected by age as often some. Yeah, some of us will lose lung capacity, but compared to a guitar player with arthritis most of will still play well well into our later years. I'm in the middle age-wise here, in the beginning of middle aged. The last show I did the stage was cramped and I couldn't move. One hour and my back was so sore I couldn't have done one more song. It took me a week to recover. I've been taking better care of myself since then, but compare that to when I was airfesting as a kid, tennis racquet guitar, doing flying splits, sliding across the living room floor stage. My hair is a memory and I've got more than a couple white hairs in my goatee. I got pills I have to take every day. I've got bills I've got to pay.

I've always taking mojo to be more than just sexual prowess, but the ability to project a sexual persona, or even just a star persona, and age certainly takes a toll on all of those. It's not just the ability to do the deed, but the idea that you could get someone to want to do the deed with you. There is a lot of ego tied up in it, and sexual persona and star persona have a lot in common. If you lose the ability to project one, can the other be that far behind? Maybe if you are famous when you are young you can turn that sexual persona into a sort of mystery when you are older.

Whether you need a pill for your pecker is really a question to ask your doctor, but is your mojo working, at least in the larger sense of mojo? Let's deal with that larger sense. Are we able to keep the audience's attention with our personal magnetism? I've seen people who are mediocre musicians who've got mojo, and I've seen good musicians with no mojo. Is mojo (again, not just sex, but the ability to project sex) something you can learn?

So true... >MAGNETISM< ... Is the "bait" the best performers use to reel an audience in hook, line and sinker, regardless of age - might be a bit tougher in your 90's but it is possible. Not sure how old Rice was here, but he has got the POWER!

Always loved Pinetops versions of Mojo - not sure how old here, but has that magnetic force goin on :)

Nate...Surprisingly - a song was not written for Muddy's Album that pertained to the "title"...Perhaps you could name that very catchy tune you put together [HARD AGAIN] - in honor of The Great Muddy Waters :)

Here is Kim talkin a little about what he learned from blues players :)
