I don't know whether this particular video montage of the WHF has been posted here, but it's worth reposting, if so. The blues stuff--including Filisko & Noden, Rick Estrin, and Steve Baker--comes after the 7:00 point, but the whole thing is worth watching for the scope of the performances. Rachelle Plas throws down towards the end; Keith Dunn opens the whole thing. We play a heck of an instrument, folks.

I was able to attend this year. It was amazing! This video captures pretty well the spread of what was present.

Dunn - a true gentleman man who has maintained the "traditional" blues feel. His CD, "Alone with the Blues" is a great solo piece. A real bluesman.

Estrin - Strong stage presence and one cool-cat. Distinct sound

Plas - Wow! So much energy. She was able to wake up the mainly elder, German crowd. Great tone.

Ollestad - fresh sound on the chromatic and diatonic.

Konstantin Reinfeld - I really like his playing style, especially having listened to a lot of Levy as of late.

Marcos Coll with The Mighty Calacas - Este hombre puede tocar bien la armonica!

Watani Family - he had a fun, rather dry sense of humor and sounded well with his wife and daughter on piano and violin.

Anyhow, all that to say that it was AMAZING!

Yes, they have a World Class mentality.

SPAH embraced this philosophy in the late 90's, but changed in 2001, heading more towards a regional Buckeye style of mind set.

They haven't changed their course. Would love it if they went back to World Class. Might even attend a convention if they did. (koff)

It's not that simple, Larry.

The harmonica ensemble shown there came to compete, as did many of the acts. SPAH has always opposed competitions as being contrary to the sharing attitude of SPAH.

They also came on their own dime for the most part. Hohner (alias the FIH) did, I'm sure, pay some of them a performing fee, but most came for the prestige of a World title. I saw some very angry non-winners in the theatre when awards were announced.

Then there is the matter of international artists. We recently were brought into painful awareness of both immigration and tax issues in US law that affect our ability to present international pro artists, even if we don't pay them.

The "regional" tag is nonsense. For one thing, SPAH has busted out of the midwest and presented SPAH conventions on both the east and west coasts (Sacramento, California, 2009, and Virginia Beach, 2011).

We also don't stick to "regional" artists. When we can afford them and they're available during summer touring season (two pretty big ifs) then we hire top names. In recent years we've tried and failed to secure some top names, and the issue was not money.

All that was good and evolving about SPAH did not end with the departure of Larry Eisenberg.

Winslow took the bait...btw, nice ending pot shot. ow

"Regional" was the wrong adjective. I meant more of a Buckeye (used to put on harmonica conventions annually in Ohio) type approach

I learned a long time ago that Winslow and I have totally different concepts as to what World Class means.

Have a great convention, Winslow.
