This may not be perfect--it's pretty note-y at points--but it's definitely fresh and modern, and at a few moments, including the very end (1:37!), it made me a fan. Your reactions? (PS: This seems to be 100% lip pursed and has lots of overblows.)

THAT'S THE STUFF! tasty. I imagine this is what Butterfield would resemble if he used overblows

Adam, I would agree with your assessment that it's note-y, but I think in the spots where it's note-y are with a purpose and creates a contrast to the spots where he hits only a few notes with a punch. It's also a thoughtful arrangement of notes. I don't think you were calling it note-y to be disparaging -- just a way to describe it.

His 6 overblow bend is awesome at the end. However, I find this less impressive than the overall whole of his playing. I'm happy that players are embracing this technique and pushing its boundaries.

Konstantian Reinfeld also has ridiculously good control of overblows (not to mention any other bend and nuance).

Aside from the overblows, it sounds Marcin is influenced by the likes of JJ Milteau to me.

I've played jazz (and other styles) trumpet for 20+ years now, and harp for about a year and a half.

Recordings like this are why I'm working on getting overblows. (I know if I can get just one...grrr.)

On one hand, harp locks me out of some notes, and that is freedom, but on the other, I want more notes.

Love the recording. Thanks for sharing.

Love his musical linear ideas - some are "harmonicky" and many are not. It all makes good sense to my ears.

Marcin was most interesting player at latest WHF-2013 in Trossingen. He got 2-nd place in jazz (while I got the 3-rd) and I think he deserves 1-st place and 7th place in Blues (while I got 2-nd). So funny he is ex-mycologist like me.

I like it. I love funk. I don't hear enough of it on harp. I still can't overblow, and still hear overblow notes from some players that make me wince. But this sounded great. I can hear how useful they are.

He's got a sense of rhythm, always a good thing to have.

My only criticism, and it's not meant to take away from how good this is-- The playing meanders a bit. A great workout to a generic funk backing track, but it would be nice to see a bit more structure. A beginning, a middle, a climax somewhere, and a resolution. I guess the note at 1:37 was a climax, but I still longed for a bit more structure-- telling a "story" in the minute and three quarters he gave himself.

Cheers,

Marcin just reposted this on Facebook and, forgetting that I'd posted it and commented on it here about a year ago, I replied "Superb!" I'm not sure why I had any reservations at all about it, first time around. This time I just think it's terrific. That long blue third towards the end got me again. This guy is the real deal.

He is very good but I must agree it's a little bit note-y for my taste that's why it is not groove-perfect. But anyway it's so cool piece of harmonica music!
1847, I thought about Fred Yonnet too.

Love this. So many great little phrases there. Really cool mixture of blues and jazz phrasing. A great example of different ways to play over the those changes.
