I recently had the opportunity to purchase a couple of Shure PE5-H mics--the same mic I've been using for the past 30 years. I already have three good ones and one that needs repair, but I thought that one more would put me over the top.

I purchased one for a modest price and the person who sold them to me tossed in the other one, with the understanding that I would give it away on this website.

I A/B'd both mics against each other and against several of mine, including the one I've used for the past 15 years (which Greg Heumann brought back up to snuff.) Both new mics are very good. One of them, the one I plan to keep, is almost as good as my daily driver; the other is one notch below that, but still quite good.

I'd like to figure out some sort of MBH forum competition that will put that second mic into the hands of somebody who actually wants it. Please suggest what sort of competition this might be.

My first thought was: 60-second videos (with a 5-second grace period but instant disqualification if it uploads as more than 65 seconds.)

Two categories:

1) most original composition, solo, approach, or set of licks

2) most improved.

#2 would require that you have video (or audio) of yourself at a very early stage of development AND video/audio of yourself now, of a quality that convinces us of how much you've improved. The video would consist of Before and After segments.

The advantage of #2 is that the stronger players on this forum, if they hoped to win the competition, would need to show just how bad they were at the beginning--as well as, of course, show us what they consider to be their strongest (recent) stuff.

Please weigh in.

BTW, I have absolutely no objection if the person who wins the competition decides to turn around and auction the mic off on eBay. That's not my business. :)

1) Is a regular contest of who is the best at something

2) Is more fun, and you get player of all level in the game. I vote for that.

I'm afraid I didn't make myself clear. This isn't a popularity contest; it's a competition. Submissions will be required in order for someone to win.

My question was: What sort of competition should it be? I offered two suggestions, but I'm open to others. No voting, please, until we've established what sort of competition it is. Whatever competition we end up settling on, I will insist on video or audio submissions of some sort.

I would suggest 3 rules...

1, Dan Ridgeway is forbidden to enter the competition :)

2, He must sign a written contract where he swears that he will not add lib harp to another members entry :)

3, Dan cannot coach or instruct another member on how to easily win the competition :)

I might add thet I feel the Rogonzap has a fighting chance to take it all, I've watched him improve over time. Jinx too may be a contender, I have not heard him play yet...but this could be his time to enter the world stage like a bolt of California lightening :)

Maybe option B, "Most Improved," will bring some of us ground feeders out of the woodwork. After seeing some of the posts here, I'm not sure what sort of chance I would stand, but I will give it a shot.

I vote for #1.

I also vote for no Dan Ridgeway. He screws up the curve and raises the bar too high.:)

That is a generous offer, Adam. I will have a go no matter the task set. Most improved sounds interesting, but may be a problem for people to document. I will suggest that sufficient time be given to allow as many as possible to contribute... this is summer vacation time. We should resist the need for instant gratification.

Since I wasn't unofficially barred from weighing in, my thoughts are that option #2 would make for a more entertaining set of contributions.

If I was able to compete, I would have some good beginner submissions...

Kudzurunner - I'm not a fan of competitions at all myself, so won't be entering, but I do have some suggestions.
Why not do something like you did a while ago. Where you posted a clip of one of your tracks and asked people to play it? Maybe choose something that doesn't have overblows/draws in it for those players that don't use them (because not everybody does) and to even out the playing field a little. Maybe choose something more classic from say the 1950's or 60's and then get a set of criteria for people to meet when they play it.

Maybe set some rules like:

1. Must be played on a standard Richter tuned harmonica.
2. Must be played acoustically and without any added effects (so that way you can truly judge a persons tone and ability).
3. Must provide reason they feel they deserve to win.

Then judge it on best overall performance. Giving points for various things such as tone, timing, etc, etc.

I'd be happy to have Dan compete and win, as long as he wins the same prize as last time...
