I saw Willie Nelson a few weeks ago at Ravinia Festival in the north Chicago suburbs (second row), and Mickey Raphael was blowing harp. He was using a Beyerdynamics M88 stick mic. What a clean and beautiful sound. Great tone, and a very, very good harp player.

Could anyone recommend some of Mickeys best work? I've heard him in passing but have nothing by him in my collection.

If I am not mistaken, Mickey's website has a vast list of links to audio files of his work. And there is a lot of it. He has always been one of my favorite harp players.

If you see him near the bus at a concert, he is always very nice to harp players.
I personally like that he is the master of a few well placed notes. He can really follow a chord progression. He's the perfect sideman and literally defines Willie's sound. Many times when no other players are with Willie, the producers request Mickey.
I had a chance to watch him in a recording session once and was amazed at how he was able to come up with great musical phrases the first time around. That's important when paying sound guys by the hour.
Although he has a huge collection of great harps built by talented techs, I've seen him walk on stage with stock harps and even take the stage with new tunings the first time around.
He's certainly one of the greats who has taken the harp out of blues bars and the common 12 bar head shake..

I'm a huge Mickey fan, and he's been a big influence on my country and melodic harp playing. Here's what I did this morning. You might be able to hear his influence in my playing: Click on the "Music" tab at this link and then play "Offertory and Anthem 7-27-14."

I met Mickey on a break when I was 17 years old. He talked to me the entire break. That's class.

I'd like to know Mickey Raphael's playing better but I don't really want to have go through his massive discography trying to find the gems. Can any of you fans put together a list of his must-have contributions?
