My CD Little Walter collection only consists of the single CD Chess collection. Apparently there's a 2 CD version. There's also an import 2 CD set called Rock Bottom. Heard the mixing/mastering is a bit different on Rock Bottom in that the harp is pushed back in the mix and sounds more part of the band. Any preferences?

If you get the Complete Little Walter 5 CD set on Chess, you'll find that there are several takes of that tune. The very first version I heard, which was an officially released 45 appeared on the Chess LP Confessin' The Blues, but there was also an alternate take but this time in the key of D and there's some chromatic being played on it and that one was released as the flip side of the 45 that had on the other side, Key To The Highway, so what you may think is a different mix may actually be one of several different alternate takes.

The 2 CD import collection is titled Rock Bottom so the harp is said to be back in the mix for all the tracks. Will have to take a look for the 5! CD set.

If my memory is correct, there is a version of that tune that was released under Muddy Waters name on a compilation on the 80's.

Hi SmokeJS, do you know the source of this info? If it's Scott Dirks then I'd take it as gospel, but otherwise, I'm not sure how this could be. There's quite a mix of tracks from various sessions, on some it's most likely that wet effect was added post mix, if the effect is on the harp & everything else (it is in a couple of these cases) then it seems unlikely they could adjust the mastered mix, with respect to harp specifically, retrospectively?

Could be a remastering issue affecting the global EQ, or maybe a panning issue whenmasters were remixed for stereo?

The source indicating the harp is mixed a bit differently on this CD set turns out to be the US Amazon site. The review was by Iceman who may or may not be the same person who uses that name on this forum. The label on this import set is Not Now as opposed to Chess.

Difficult to say without having the CD's to hand, I'm not hearing anything striking in that respect though, when comparing 2 sources for the Rock Bottom compilation against other online sources...but being the internet, there's other factors possibly at play.

Otherwise, it looks like a pretty good selection if you have trouble finding the 5 box set. The tracks are the original Chess recordings, apart from "I Just Keep Lovin' Her" (Chance), but that doesn't rule out differences in remastering.

Have not done any revues on Amazon for Little Walter releases.
