From Game of Thrones: The song 'The Rains of Castamere' played instrumental on a Low, low F Hohner Thunderbird in third position, key of Gm. Draw 2 and three tuned down a hole step. Draw seven tuned down a half step. I used blue tac (magic putty, häftmassa) to tune down the reeds as Isaac Ullah has shown in his videos.

Recorded with a Shure Sm58 to a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. Reverb added in Ableton lite 9.

Comments and critic welcome.

Edit: Oooops, forgot the OT...

Well it's kind of medival blues, ennit?

With that much reverb, i would wait a little more between each phrases and make more uses of silences and pauses to makes the notes hang out in the air, just like you did at 45sec.
It feels a little too rushed and almost happy which is just not right for that song.

Also, do you plan to do the Bear and the Maiden fair next ? :D

Thanks for listening, Kaining! I agree that it became a bit rushed. I just thought the sound was cool and really wanted it fat. Looked for that cello sound.

I promise I won't hack the bear and the maiden fair :)

Oh, yeah, the sound !

Well, if i was nitpicking about the time, you probably guessed that i didn't found any fault with your sound.
It is quite impressive actually.
As for the harp, what's the tuning of a low low F ? It start at F3 or F2 ?

My tuner says F2...

Close to the brown noise (South Park reference )

At a side note: the tuning I ended up with is quite nice. The same layout on the low octave as a the 'usual' middle. Giving me a Gm on the draw chord down low, too. Four split Octaves on all blow and draw notes up to the blow 4-6 octave...

There is probably a name for that tuning...?

It's 11.5b on the scale finder: http://overblow.com/?menuid=26#. Natural minor in third position is very nice, but I still prefer the dorian version (11.5, DOIT tuning, also called easy third by Seydel). Will listen to your video as soon as I get home from work !

Thanks, Isaac, my man! Your tinkering and playing really inspired me to do this piece. Blue tac worked as a charm! Let me tell you that it sound fat this side of the mic even without the reverb... To me at least ;).

By the way. Do you have a blue tac video? Or was I just making that up? Do you have a link? I was asked to put up a post on a Swedish forum about it and I didn't find any when I yt searched

@ Hannes - I hope you like it!

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten around to filming a vid on blutak yet. I said I was going to do one in my valves video, but haven't done one yet. It's been much too long, so I really ought to do it! Perhaps I can steal some time this week...

As a side note, I'm a really big fan of tuning systems that make the 1st and 2nd octaves have the same note order. My "modern pentatonic' tuning does this (also called "Paddy Richter extended"), as does the 'Easy Third' tuning system, and the "Richter Extended". As you mentioned, A LOT of split octave possibilities, good consistent chording, and ability to intuitively repeat runs and licks in two octaves with the same breath pattern. Probably the "extended" suffix is the best "common name" for these types of tunings (although I might have preferred to use the word "consistent" instead). IMO, if harmonicas were regulalry tuned with this kind of consistent tuning, scheme, our little instrument might be played by more folks! :)

Great video, man!!! It's such an easy and totally reversible process... I love it. You covered the subject really really well, but I do have a couple of additional "tips" that make it easier (especially when you are doing pretty drastic retunings on multiple reeds), so I may still also make video on this subject as well. But,yeah, great job man!
