I have a solid state Peavey Special 112, a SM57 mic, and very little amplified playing experience. I one day plan to pick up a nice little tube combo amp. But… for now… this is what I have. Can anyone provide any tips that might help me discover a somewhat functional harmonica tone through this amp? Let's assume, of course, that my acoustic tone and microphone technique are flawless, which… ummm… is *cough cough* totally true… *wink*

Here's a link to that amp's manual if it helps:

Thanks!
Tom

Since your acoustic tone and mic handling techniques are flawless, you'll be to get a good sound out of it, but you would already know that. You would also know to try it and let 'er rip.

Lol Joe!

TBird - The answer is of course try it and see. Experiment by playing through it until you get a sound you like. It's that simple.

If your a beginner trying to get passable tone with that combo, maybe not - it's possible...

An intermediate player, maybe - hopefully...

Advanced skills - should work fine if that's all you got...

Ha! Yeah… every time I find myself aimlessly trolling this forum I start to hear a voice in the back of my head saying "shouldn't you just be playing?" I suppose that is particularly applicable in this situation.

Try this: Plug into the lower gain input. Volume at 9 or 10, move the gain up slowly until you get the volume you want. Bass at 9, Mid at 0, treble at 1 or 2. On some of my little battery powered SS amps I find that the distortion comes from the gain, so mess with the volume and gain to get the tone you want.

Wow!! Look at all those knobs. There's gotta be a harmonica setting there somewhere. The thing you want to be careful of is watching Craigslist for amps with a willingness to buy another Peavey. Pretty soon you might have 4 or 5 of them and you might start daisy chaining them together, and O' Lordy, the knobs then.

Trust me on this.
