If the hole 6 blow reed and hole 7 draw reed had valves, would that enable them to be bent down a half step?

A (single) valve on the 6 blow would sit on top of the plate and be activated when you draw. So when you go for the draw bend, the blow reed is taken out of the equation. What you get is the 6 draw with a half step bend down. It will sound different than the regular 6 draw bend (half step) because it will be a single reed bend instead of both reeds making the sound.

Try it. take the covers off and put your finger over the 6 blow slot and play 6 draw and then 6 draw bend.

A single valve on the 7 draw is in the slot and activates when you blow. The 7 draw reed is taken out of the equation when you play the blow bend. You will get a 7 blow half-step bend down. Single reed bend.

Try it. Put your finger over the 7 draw reed and slot and play the 7 hole blow bend.

I hope this helps.

I forgot to mention if you want the 6 blow to bend down a half step, you need to valve the 6 draw reed. Instead of hitting an overblow (up) you will bend the 6 blow reed down.

If you want the 7 draw reed to bend a half step down, valve the 7 blow. Same thing - no overdraw (up) but a semitone bend down.

So you valve the opposite reed in the hole, interesting. Thanks, arzajac.

Greg: great article.

Valved bends aren't necessarily limited to a half step, they can be bent down much further depending on how well the reed is set up.
