Hot rod has extra gain stages...maybe just one extra gain stage...'extra drive'
I think that is about it. There may be some other changes in component values. I'm not sure if the blues Deville might be more robust construction, or similar to hot rod. The hot rods aren't tremendously sturdy. That said...mine is 17 years old and going strong.
I know two approaches to modifying a horrid (auto correct which must stay!) Deville which give good results. You can probably find my thread on lone wolf forum which describes the 'aki kumar' mod, and the suggestions from mwjb. I implemented mwjb ideas. Happy with result. The aki kumar amp is known to have been a great performer, and mods a little simpler.

I've played through Aki's Deville. I got done killer time it if that amp. It's a really good amp, but a lot of beginners don't like it. You need good tone and technique to make that thing sing.

Stoke, I'm very happy with mine. Bit heavy for my worn out spine, but makes a good big sound, responsive, can get filthy if you want or a cleaner sound, good on board reverb, takes pedals well in the fx loop, good projection, allows me to play with dynamics...and not too exxy.
I wanted a bassman but at the time the cheapest I could find in Australia was about $1400. The HRD came in under $900 and mods were cheap.
I think I prefer the lower gain input with my old CR/CM mics. I'm using all 12ax7s and can get volume around 4.

Stoke I have a killer Blues DeVille for sale. Original 1993, not a re-issue. Near mint condition, tone stacks have been modded, with 3 blue frame alnico's and one Eminence Lil Buddy, with original foot switch. Very nice amp, very strong. $550.00 plus any shipping.

The one Slimharp mentions was the very best version for harp, hands down, and they had the same Eminence made blue alnico magnet speakers the first Bassman RI's had and I thought it sounded more like a real Bassman at the time than the first reissues did. The prices even when the first ones came out were actually less expensive than the Bassman RI's were.

Thanks Bee,I was thinking of getting a bassman but their a bit pricy and sparce compared to the deville , it seems some good players including yourself and Kim Wilson use the deville so I think that might be the way forward for me,I've been using the pa and the wolf pedals for a few months to good effect but the last gig the sound man turned me down on the monitor so I was kinda playing blind! Thanks for your input and if I'm lucky enough to get one I'll be back on with more info question, cheers Mark

Didnt know you were in the UK. Yeah that would be expensive, and the Deville is heavy. Hope you find a good one local.

I have played a buddy stock 4x10 Deville several times. I found the clean channel to be just fine for harp. Big fat tone when dilled in. Played it at an outdoor venue once. Awsome. It did not have the blue speakers but is well broken in. These amps do have common problems such as poor solder joints, component overheating and linier taper pots. They are a PITA to work on. The Series III amps have confronted some of this I understand...BN

@Barley Nectar - Certainly a PITA to work on, delicate jack sockets etc, but one of the main problems with the USA Blues Deluxes was the dropping resistors in the 16v relay supply disconnecting themselves & turning the amp off (fixed on the RI models). Even the older DeVilles used a different supply circuit, whilst I can't say it won't ever happen with those, it does seem markedly less common. The DeVilles are a major bang for the buck.
