I'm sure this question has come up but I wasn't here for it. How old is everyone? I just turned 18 last month. I'm just wondering what the average age is for harp players aproximately.

The Blues Harp Amps Blog did a poll of hundreds of harp players back in 2011. The average age of poll participants was 51 years.

I am older than that. ;-)

Closing in on 53 (according to "the man"). Twentysomething in my head.

I'm old enough that I know the answer, but I don't know the question. (Douglas Adams reference)

Average ages are going to always look 'old' to young players. If you have an 18 year old and a 70 year old that averages out to a middle aged 44. Mean, median, mode would be an interesting breakdown and probably mean more for demographic purposes.

@ Nate and Ryan- average age of harp players isn't measurable with the way you ask the question (low valiability). The best thing you can hope to get an answer on is the question: "What is the mean age of harmonica players that have a account on MBH and are reading and answering OT threads?" I'm afraid it's quite biased :). I agree with Nate that mean may not be as interesting as a way to show the spread. I'd say a classic histogram would do the trick.

I've been playing harp for, uh, 41 years. My first pro gig was in 1976. My, how time does fly, eh?

Okay, to add the 'length of playing', shoot, I've lost track, but my first few posts on the forum I was roughly at the 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' stage of harp, and the site was pretty new.

Looking at the thread about 2000 posters, it looks like the site started in 2008, so that would be about when I started playing harp too. I remember I started around Christmas time.

Here is the list of then 2000 posters.

There might be some info on the 'Where are you from thread'

And in related demographic information, we have a forum map-

Old enough to remember when you could tell a harp player was serious, because he soaked his harps before a gig

59. Got my first at age 16 but I was just bad for years after that. Technically I've been playing for about 43 years but I began to actually make real progress about 23 years ago. 14 or 15 ago I began to reach a level I like.
