Charlie McCoy. The Blues Doctors WILL do this song:

Please post other harp-centric versions. I've always faked my way through, but this particular video has convinced me that I need to buckle down.

Stick with the melody!

Howard.

Edit: It's great up to 2:45, then he does a piano solo that goes off the reservation and jumps back on the harp at 4:30 for some serious jazz.

I think its fair to call this the opposite of Adam's comment about sticking to the melody...

It's a tune we do frequently at The Harmonica Club

It's easy to play in 12th position, but lacks the soul you get when done right in 2nd.

I feel I have to show my righteous indignation as a current native of Indiana that I can't believe Hoagy Carmichael hasn't been mentioned yet!

I think I prefer Christelle's version.. her notes are so so clean and on.

This is the kind of song that, IMHO, can only be played at its full potential, on harmonica, on the chromatic. Christelle and Charlie certainly do versions that are exemplary, for a diatonic harp. Howard, for all his diatonic virtuosity, doesn't hit the depth of the music, again, IMHO. An example, perhaps, of trying to do a job with a tool that just isn't designed to get the job done right, though you can do a version of the job with it. Is this a fine point not worth mentioning? I'm sure everyone will have an opinion about that.
My first place vote goes, unequivocally, to Phil.

Have to agree with Harp-er. As harp players we recognize the incredible OB skill of Howard or Christelle - but they STILL sound a little funny to me - its a very tough tune to pull off 100% musically on diatonic. I'd like to hear Todd Parrot do it - if anyone could he is the guy. But until then, PURELY as a listener and not as a harp geek - I think the chromatic version is best.

I would agree: my preference is for the chromatic version as played by Phil. The notes are on pitch without some of the variation that diatonic bends have, making for a clean, solid performance played with emotion. Phil Caltabellotta is a really good player! I have heard him play at SPAH.

I do think that Charlie, Christelle, & Howard all played it wonderfully on diatonic. I just prefer Phil's chromatic harmonica version.

I thought I remembers seeing a thread like this a while ago! Sorry to drag it back to the top of the list, but I stumbled across this video and really enjoyed it.

Kudzu, any luck with a Blues Doctors vision yet? I'd love to hear it.

The Blues Doctors added this to our repertoire this year. Alan's still working on the high notes, but we're over the hump and will continue to work on this.

@ Kudzu , A Big thanks for bringing this song into the arena ..I was looking around to find a Norton B version .. bumped into Roly Platt promoting his album .. on it his version of Georgia ... as does the rest of his music ..Boogie Woggie- I got a woman & Rippin' it up ( Smoking Hot ! ) ... to his ballads across a few geners .. Sounds Great ! .. Simple? but Very Deep
His tone, timing and phrasing make a visit to his site well worth a short or maybe long visit for all that don't know of him.
I see his name was brought up here only a few times,
A nice X-mas addition to my music listening interests .. Thanks for the inspiration to search around !

Link to Roy Platt site: some teasers at both places ..

Link to Somewhere over the rainbow..a full length promo doing for his debut album ..
It's possible Many folks here will recognize the great mic he's using (as am I) .. Thanks to Gregg H.

@Ross ,
Raquel does a fine job .. her harp player put together a real pretty rendition & get's my vote for the accompaniment .. nicest I've heard done to this tune / with vocal's in this thread .. Would like to hear him do it without a vocalist ...

The best version imo I've heard was done by Norton Buffalo live, unfortunately seems there is no recording of him doing Georgia ..
if anyone has or can find it .. would be a nice addition to this thread ..

Going back to BronzeWailer's March 9th post.., Am I mistaken, or is Mickey Raphael playing an XB-40?

Thievin'

Mickey is playing a standard tuned diatonic in 2nd pos on the recording.
Interestingly enough, in performance he will sometimes use a natural minor.

"Georgia On My Mind" -- lobby jam at SPAH, August 15, 2012, Irving TX. Grant Osborne has the first solo on chromatic, followed by Jelly Roll Johnson (diatonic, beginning at 0:30); Scott Albert Johnson (diatonic, 1:23); Charlie Spranklin (chromatic, 2:18); Slim Heilpern (chromatic at 3:11, and guitar throughout); Harris Simon (diatonic, 4:05); and Sam Friedman (diatonic) and Joe Leone (diatonic) taking it home through the outro beginning at 4:57.

Best, natural version of the songs posted here is Raquel Rodriguez's. Beautiful, unforced singing, and perfect harmonica accompaniment by Ross Garren. Ross does not make this a harmonica show-piece. He plays what fits this singer and this song.

Cheers,

wolf kristiansen

p.s. Ross, after I wrote this, I saw that you posted the video, and you played in it. Keep playing, and keep posting.

I must admit I have a preference for Charlie McCoys version & of course Mickey Raphael whom I consider one of the best harp players on the planet. I like the treatment that Mickey gives in his solos ie he speaks clearly & concisely in his back ups of Willie & in fact Mickeys harp is the salt pepper sauce & seasoning in all of Willies recordings. He doesn't overplay ie he speaks when spoken to and only replies when he has something to say. He also seems to my ear use a variety of harp tunings including tremolos & chromatics.
