Here's a nice video of Carlos del Junco playing "Got My Mojo Working." He does his crazy stuff between 4:00 and 5:00. Yes, this particular section is mostly worked out, rather than improvised. Then again, I hear that Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart sometimes worked stuff out in advance.

Wonderful, outstanding, harmonica stylist, with chops galore. So freaking, that I get a creepy feeling, after a barrage of high range trebly notes and can't buy it.Canadiens David rotundo, and that guy Adams going to play with, just more to my liking. Now Mitch kashmar's high less than real trebly notes fit for me.

I'm surprised no one comments on Carlos' unique laid back vocal styling...relaxed and high energy at the same time.

Carlos has developed his own unique diatonic approach and continues to build on it.

He also has a habit of playing with very accomplished musicians who prefer low volume and talent to loud in your face barrages, as well as moving away from that strict blues shuffle.

I enjoyed his firework display of arpeggios working the whole range of the harmonica, which, as Kudzu points out, is a result of specific practice techniques rather than in the moment improv.

As a matter of fact, a lot of what Carlos does is worked out in advance, although, to my ears, it is unique in that it is totally enjoyable...even after repeated listening.

Still one of my favorite musicians.

ps...also love his stage presence/movements...the CDJ Sideways One Leg Lift.

Incredible. There are a lot more notes in his harmonica than there are in mine.

Carlos has told me on more than a few occasions that he almost never improvises. But Adam's point is profound with Bach etc...! Sean Costello (RIP) also told me, on nights where the room, PA or overall sound sucked, that he preferred not to improvise at all either, because in his words: "At least I know what I'm playing is cool, even if the sound ain't cool tonight". Makes some sense to me. Shawn Starski also would do that on bad nights as well, he always had a preplanned solo ready for any tune we called and would deviate from that a little or a lot depending upon the room, his mood, and other factors.
Back to Carlos: I love his playing very very much and I think I have learned a lot from him from afar.(could learn a lot more!) I agree with Larry that Carlos plays with superb players who are adept at lots of genres and that always adds to any players attraction for most of us but I have known a couple of people who have put in more than a couple of years in his band who definitely did not prefer the extremely low volume requirements or the preplanned chorus (amount of solo time) and felt some mild frustration etc.. Being way too loud obviously isnt the best but some guys (especially Guitars) like/need to turn up a little bit for natural no pedal affected real break up and bringing two or three rigs on the road is not realistic for most of us. Those guys turned down all the same of course out of respect, to keep the gig, because their pros and I'm sure would not want to be identified by name here or anywhere. Regardless they all respected Carlos as a boss and a musician. I love his records and ideas, tone and chops, the whole deal. I'm no one of course to criticize singing as I'm frequently ridiculously bad in that department but Carlos's vocals don't really send me, but again who the hell am I. Carlos Rocks hard and Im sure that Gig with Adam, Jerome and Carlos will be one amazing event!!

I've played in bands where you had to play the same solos note for note every night as well as bands that do the opposite so that you're always in the moment. I know plenty of musicians who play a wide variety of instruments that go back and forth including some names that are very well known.

There are gonna be nights where you are dealing with really horrible acoustics or you're felling that you're just not on your game that night and that makes perfect professional sense to have a back up plan and have stuff entirely worked out, but the challenge is to make it sound fresh and fiery new every night and for some musicians, that's a high challenge and I've been in situations where I had to do that.

I use dynamics quite a bit, and so playing with people who love low volume makes it much easier to keep tight control of dynamics and it allows me to play in places that bands that like to play loud will never be able to cut.

In particular I like Carlos' tone (especially amplified!), phrasing, melodic ideas, but in general I never feel pleasure listening to him. The same thing about Piazza. While I can listen to others, e.g. Jason and to PT Gazell with a big pleasure.

Carlos is definitely a harmonica playing singer...Thank God he can play harp, I love Carlos :) Singing is a very tough hill to climb, few harpers can do it any kind of justice...
