Just thought I would add another "special 20" thread just for fun, because you can never get enough of 'em

How would you go about doing that? What do you mean "the rockets prove that to me"? Thanks in advance!

Here's one I did. Polished the comb also. I really like today's Special 20's.

It looks beautiful. So do you just loosen the outside screws and bend it or do you open it and completely maybe bend it by banging it with a hammer?

I just use a plain ol' hammer. Take the covers off, and hammer them open against a rounded edge. They are quite easy to do, but practice on something like a Blues Band first. Golden Melodies, on the other hand, are a pain to do and are much easier to screw up.

Got it. I have some broken harps that I messed up while tweaking that I can practice on. Thanks Todd!

Yeah, I tried doing it to a GM (for a customer) and made a mess!
I don't know if it matters to me if the covers are open . . .
I like SP20s a lot, but I just purchased a set of reed plates from Ron (again, for a customer), and they seem to be $30.
Gotta take care of your harps, they are not getting any cheaper!

I tried a lot of brands .I always return to the SP20 .
Once you know how to tweak them , they are very good harps ."Old reliable" is a good name !
I fit them with stainless steel screws & nuts for the reedplates & the covers .
I "round" the comb but don't polish it .
@ Todd : your SP20 is nice !

@Special Sean;I learned how to open the covers from a vid that Dave Payne had up a few years back, which isn,t available anymore. You take a 2x4 cut-off approx.1 ft long. You lay the cover with the edge (the side you want to open)resting on the 2x4,s edge, its hangs over ever so slightly. You then lightly tap with a hammer on the edge and viola.I managed it on the first shot but you might want to practice on an old cover. Before that the wizard(myself)use to run them along a bench grinder.Obviously Daves way was alot easier. If you happen to be lurking Dave,Thanks for the tip.

Wow, I had a few oldies and just squashed the backs in with some long nose pliers, looked shitty but saved me removing the covers, sounded the same but not as acoustic friendly tho....whatev.

To open covers in back is OK for acoustic busking .
I like loud harps .

I take the covers off and use pliars to open them. No chance of slipping and screwing up a reed or two.

the rocket is the way I wish sp20s were constructed...open backs and vented covers...like a crossover or marine band deluxe to mb1896....superior constructionIMHO
