Just caught sight of this. Looks like VHT is expanding a bit...
VHT Special 44 Combo
What I wanna know is how the heck they claim a pair of 6V6's will put out 44 watts. Unless they mean by way of swapping them out for 6L6's... ----------

Spec says 2x6L6 & 4x12AX7.
Got some nice features like the built in 9vdc supply.
Whether it's a good amp for harp is another matter. ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness

LOL! I'm not kidding guys...it said 6V6's a while ago. I wrote VHT to ask them that very question, and now the pages say 6L6 for both the combo and the head. Looks like they caught their boo boo.
EDIT: Email I just received from them...
"Thanks for catching that mistake. The Special 44 comes with a pair of 6L6 tubes (not 6V6 tubes). We'll correct that mistake on the website soon. It's also designed to run EL34 tubes for a more Marshall-like flavor."
At first glance, it looks to me like it might be based in part on a blonde Bassman. ----------

Well it remains to be seen whether or not I'll sell my modded VHT Special 6 and the Bassman reissue to replace them with one of these.

@Leather
Somehow I doubt it'll be that harp friendly OOTB. But who knows? Someone like Mark or Randy gets their hands on one and comes up with some mods...could wind up being a bitchin harp amp. ----------

Has anyone tried this amp for harp? It sure looks the business from the specs.... and the eyelet type construction should be good for a couple of mods. Same sort of changes as the special six combo could turn it into the bigger brother. I suspect speaker will be a deftinate change - seems to be more critical for a higher wattage amp than a low watt amp.

@ 528hemi. I thought the silvertone amp sounded excellent, and so did you.
I tried to post in that thread but there is no response window there for me??? Weird.
1-44W, I wonder how they do that??? i believe VHT posts there schematics...BN

It looks great on paper. Can't wait to hear one with harp.

Hey BN ... Variable watts functions by varying the B+ from 48v to 450v and at sane time bias v from 4v to 48v. As killer Hertz says.. They look good on paper and sections of schematic seen very fenderish...but with some niceties thrown in. Looking at it I think it would run 6v6 also for more breakup at slightly less output.

I had a play around with a VHT Special 44 combo the other week using a 1964 shure 440 mic. The specs on this amp seem pretty good. I was surprised in the variation of tones possible. The depth control especially gave almost a modeling amp scenario .... Cranked back to the first 4 positions seemed to really suit the harp and bring out the growl that a lot of us like, but the whole range of tones from that switch I can see would suit a lot of different styles. The contour switch is a high cut and I thought it sounded best in he (ii) position - most cut. The presence knob didn't make a lot of difference except when holding a high note - it added a sort of shimmer to the sound.. probably more guitar orientated. The variable watt's was great - volume up and watts down gave a great breakup at low volume without the loss of tone. I couldn't crank it up in the shop to see how it went wide open but i got the impression that it's just a matter of balancing the two controls to get " that sound " at any volume. The speaker in it seemed a bit bright and although it was brand new I get the feeling it'd never be great - I'd put an alnico in there. A good size amp .. Not too heavy or bulky. The inbuilt pedal 9v out is a great idea. Shame no tube reverb. Biggest shame is the price. It is just too expensive. The special 6 was a bargain. This amp I reckon is its better bigger brother but at 3 times the cost it just doesn't make sense. ... However I found a head version at a right price ...and the VHT echo-verb pedal also ...so now I am awaiting the post . Planned to mod the tone stack a little as per the special 6 mods and try it with an old Alnico ...maybe build a custom cab so its a combo...the idea of using an old valve radio case appeals to me!
