I had a heckler experience tonight that I wish so bad to have gotten on video. I know words can't prove it like a video can, but I've got to tell someone that can appreciate this.

My band was playing a gig tonight for a 20yr high school reunion/get together. It wasn't the full out reunion, but they organized this get together at a club downtown. We regularly play for the 30s crowd so life is normal. Well it was decided to also open the club to the public I guess to rake in a few more bucks. That said, there was a little wiggle room in the demographic. No problem, first set went well, people are dancing and singing along.

We kicked off our second set around 11pm. 2 songs in and we start playing a Maroon 5 song (not my personal favorite, but we play all kinds). This girl walks up on stage and over to me. We've been getting hit on all night by older ladies but this girl was a good bit younger than the 20 year reunion crowd.

She leans in and says, "are you seriously playing this right now?"

I say, "yeah." And she says, "Maroon 5. Really?" I'm thinking do you like it or what, where are we going with this? She says, "you know, this is why this place sucks- because of the music- people like you come in here and play sh*t like Maroon 5."

I fought through the heavy smell of alcohol on her breath and said, "and to think your drunk a$$ paid to watch us." She said, "oh, I'm not drunk." All I could think to say was, "well go sit in somebody's lap so you can get another drink then." She gave a "ugh" and turned and walked right out the front door.

I have dealt with a heckler or two having been a professional magician, but this is the first one I've had to deal with playing music. I figured might as well be a jerk. It's worked for me in the past. I'm not going to not get paid and I'm married so I don't have to worry about impressing this girl. I tried to turn my mic up and get our conversation over the pa, but I don't think it got out.

Any one had a heckler like this?

Isn't a heckler one that shouts at you from a crowd in order to be heard?

Methinks you were just having a private conversation with a drunk in a bar. Happens all the time.

First rule: When I'm on stage it's MY stage. People who don't belong there are trespassing and taking a risk whether they know it or not. I will tell them in a hurry and move them off firmly. Is that offensive? Probably. I have seen some ugly things happen on a stage thanks to patrons being where they were not supposed to be.

Good lines, Dog Face. My story is not so much of being heckled but my reputation impugned... A jazz singer I know asked me to guest on a song at her EP launch. She specializes in risqué tales of love gone wrong, because the guy she's in love with has some problem or other. I was sitting in the audience with my wife and sister-in-law. She finished a tale of flying from Sydney to Shanghai to be with a guy she'd been romancing on the net (she's a Qantas hostess so can do that kind of thing) and the punch line was: "and then he couldn't get it up. Speaking of getting up, I'd like to ask my friend Eric to come on stage." To which someone near us in the audience shouted, "can HE get it up?" To her credit, my wife shouted out "YES!"
