I need a new vintage style vocal mic with serious mojo and less headaches. Currently I use an old Shure 55s and love the style and sound but every once in a while (never on stage luckily) it cuts out on me and doesn't have the same full sound when it comes back on. It's a bummer but I need a back up while I figure out what is wrong with it. The Heil Fin looks interesting and the MXL Cr77 does too. It needs to be dynamic. Anyone have any suggestions or experience with Vintage looking dynamic vocal microphones?

Thanks,
Chuck D.

Why does it need to be vintage looking? Surely a mics performance is more important than how it looks? Why not just use an SM58? It's the industry standard for a reason.

FreeWilly - Well it wasn't really just a bunch of rhetorical questions. I was wondering why someone would choose to use a vintage mic for vocals, when the sound reproduction and reliability of modern mics like the SM58 is generally speaking far superior for vocals. I honestly can't see any real audio benefits to be gained from it. So unless it was purely for cosmetic reasons as a part of the act, it would seem a rather illogical choice to me.

The new 55's are 58's in a 55 shell. They sound great and are the same workhorse as the 58's we all know and love. I have a bag of 58's that I use all the time. With that being said my vintage 55s from the 60's has a larger diaphragm and sounds amazing for the beefy vocal tone I'm after. I get compliments on the sound quite often. The rest of the guys in the band use the new 55sh and they sound really good. So what I am looking for is an alternative. Anyone have experience with some of the newer vintage style microphones out there? MXL CR77 ?

Quick story: My 1960ish 55s was given to me and needed a new foam insert. I emailed Shure and told them how it had deteriorated and they sent me one the next day for free. Now that is customer service! Only positive things to say about that experience.

I have a buddy who uses the Nady PCM-200 on a regular basis and loves it. Heck of a lot cheaper than a 55, and does the same job with the same vintage look. I myself have its condensor counterpart the PCM-100. I use it for voiceover and podcast work. No complaints on my end.
