Hey Folks,

I'm leaving England for New Orleans on Monday (13th Jan), I'm going to be there for 8 weeks so if anyone has any recommendations I'd love to hear them or if anyone is a local and would like to play some music together sometime I'd really relish the opportunity.

Can't wait!

Hi Joe. I live in New Orleans, and there is a bunch of stuff to do here, harmonica related. Contact me via my email, and I will tell you more.

Joe you may want to check out Johnny Mastero and Mamas Boys at a club called BMC. Johnny is a good friend of mine and a good dude. I think on Sundays they thrown down a jam session. There is also a active harmonica society there. Maybe Harvey knows about it.

I know a little about the Crescent City Harmonica Club, since I am the Founder and President. The Jam at BMC is on Monday Night and it is hosted by Smoky Greenwell, who replaced Lee Oskar in War. There is also a couple of other Jams on Monday Night. When I go out on Monday Night, which I do normally when there is someone coming in town, such as you, Joe, I go to all three. There is also an every Wednesday Jam, at the Recovery Room, which is the longest running jam in New Orleans, and it is Hosted by Oscar and the Blues Cats. Oscar is a harp player, and we have our monthly Harmonica Club meeting there, on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 6:00, followed by Oscar's Jam. There could possibly be some Lingere girls there too.

Johnny Mastro is a great guy, and a great Harmonica Player. In fact his whole band is great. He does play at BMC on Sundays, rather early, but it is not a jam. He is pretty good about getting other musicians up, though. I need to get down there pretty quick. And there is more. If you know your way around, have the connections, and you have the time, there is a place to play somewhere almost every night, at least for me.

You are going to miss Adam Gussow, by two days, playing at two clubs here. I have give up a gig( it wasn't a great gig) to go see him at at least one of the clubs. You never know who is going to show up somewhere in New Orleans.

Try to catch some second lines while you're there; there's one almost every Sunday. Here are a few scheduled events along with video from last year's parades:

Jan 19: Undefeated Divas Parade

Jan 26: Ladies of Unity Parade

Feb 2: Treme Sidewalk Steppers Parade

Feb 16: CTC Steppers Parade

Mar 9: Keeping It Real Parade

Mar 16: Single Men Parade

Check the WWOZ website's Takin' It to the Streets page for updates and route details.

Look out for The Blue Trees - www.thebluetrees.org. Not harmonica related, though I did play harmonica for Megan Blue, the singer, when she lived in Austin. Megan has a voice that can strip rust off a fast moving freight train at 20 paces.
