Was given a R. Sleigh Draw Scraper from a guy whom gave up customizing...or even tuning harmonicas,
Anyway...like most stiff he gives me it is defective.

Somehow he made it duller than a 1970s French film.

Anyone have a really good way to sharpen these things?
Andrew? Harvey? Tom?
I do have an Arkansas wet stone but this may need a grinding wheel or similar.
Thanks in Advance. Aloha, Mark

I guess you know, but there is a clip of R.Sleigh showing how he sharpens it. With a stone indeed. Can't remember where the vid was. Perhaps it came with the scraper. Can look if your interested.

When mine goes dull, I'll probably just order a new one, and sell the wrenches on. Cheaper than a stone and less hazzle. Oh, and Richard makes a buck or two. In your case... I'd of course try to sharpen it first :) Good luck.

About 12 strokes on a fine diamond sanding block and then 12-30 strokes on 1500 grit wet dry on a flat granite slab...will be good as new.

Thanks Guys! So there's that Sleigh video. Like Harvey says. " I'm so old I shouldn't be allowed near a computer".
The guy who gave it to me seems to have created two flat surfaces on the draw scraper. mebee dat buggah toast.------

FYI, you can get the diamond sanding blocks at places like ACE Hardware for around ten bucks. I think they are sometimes called bench stones? They are an inch or two long and used to sharpen knives.

Anyways, use the same motion Richard describes with the FINEST one. The wet/dry makes it even sharper, but you have to be careful to have it on a flat surface as to now warp the scrapper tip.

If you want to skip that step, just do 20-30 runs on the diamond block thingy.

These would work:

Thanks Mike,

Think i'll go out and get a diamond block. I need serious cutting action.

I have several tools to tune with. My favs are my files and rotary tool. Still, I'd like to see if there is an appreciable difference using the draw scraper.

Hey Mark. I can't help you with that one, but I tune my little chisel that I camfer reeds with, and a bunch of other stuff the same way Richard does, except I push insteaed of pull.

Its good to have you back in business. As soon as I finish remodeling my shop I will get back to work too. I hurt my back doing a remodel to my shop, and I have been out for a couple of weeks. Seems like it is one thing after another. Maybe I am getting too old.

Howzit Harvey!

Yeah, it's good to be back and I'm sorry about your back. I got a bone disease, I've had five hip operations since 1979. I get them more often than I'd like but I wear 'em out. Anyway, they warned me I may develop back problems in the future. Knock on wood, I'm fine....and old. heh, heh. :-)

Howzit Gnarly! All Alohas and Mahalos.

OH!!! I got out my Arkansas wet stone. I bought it years ago at a store that only sells wood working tools. I went to the right place.

Just sharpened my draw scraper. Worked like a charm! I even corrected extra bevel previous owner accidently added. Oh, and edge was uneven. Sheesh! Anyhooo,,,, Peels brass nicely. I think I still prefer my rotary tool but the draw scraper is good if you want to hide tuning marks. Is good tool.

@MP I'm in Cancun and the weather is cloudy and drizzly--hoping for some sun on Friday, we fly back to San Diego on Saturday.
I have a draw scraper that the great Wally Peterman made for me, I am using it judiciously (mostly to remove silver solder and for fine tuning) so I hope not to have to sharpen it anytime soon--but whe the time comes, I will have the good information! Gracias!

Hey Gnarly,
Hope weather clears up. I used sewing machine oil on my wet stone. I found it in a shed out back. I suppose any old motor oil or mineral oil will work. My dad used motor oil on his tools (to keep them from rusting) and even to sharpen tools on his wet stone.

Anywaaaay, I pulled scraper toward me as if I were tuning a reed. I had to use a lot of pressure to correct totally messed up edge.
I think i'll use it for when I want to hide tuning marks. I've gotten so used to my rotary tool that I don't feel like changing gears right now. We'll see.
