@jmnorem -- the very first JT30's that stopped using the screw on connectors used a mini-XLR connector and the only cables available were thin and ridiculously flimsy and when those cables got stepped on, those cables got easily damaged, often times much faster than the older JT30's that used the screw on connectors. The connectors were placed in the same spot where the screw on connectors where and the spot where you would be able to screw the mic onto a mic stand was left alone.

Around 1985/86, they finally went to the standard XLR connector, but in order to make it fit, they had to place it where you used to be able to screw it into the mic stand. At the same time, however, many of the crystals were quite sub par (but nowhere near as god awful as the ones being made by Kobitone of Japan, which is what's in them now.

In 1987/88, that's when they issued the JT30's as the Hohner Blues Blaster, which came with the volume control and the following year, they also issued them under the Astatic name with volume controls. From Astatic themselves, I was told that the early BB's used 250K pots while the ones under the Astatic name used 500K pots, and for crystal/ceramic cartridges, these are totally wrong, because the correct pot for those elements are 5meg, tho a minimum of 1meg will more than do the job and the pots they put in them works better from CM/CR cartidges than with crystals/ceramics.

I have personally found that the overall output is consistently stronger with the screw on set up, especially when you use the screw on to 1/4 plug adapter and you have a wide choice of high quality cables that both hold up better and sounds better as a whole. With the XLR set up, it's easy to run across poor quality or improperly wired cables and in just about every brick and mortar retail store, the salesmen will always think is a low-z mic, which isn't true, but when it comes to knowing anything about harmonicas, sales people in those stores are as dumb as bag of sand.

When they changed over to the XLR set up, they also changed the materials behind the grille itself and the newer setup lets in far too much body heat and moisture and because of that, crystals would die out FAR faster than the pre-1984 setup. I had one of those JT30VC's and the crystal died out because of those reasons within 2 years and when I changed it to a grille from one of my pre-1984's, I never had that problem again.

Oso,
Tom Halchak of Blue Moon Harmonicas has a huge selection of Pre-War Marine Bands. He's a member of this forum, too.

He has every key made in pre-War and has different pre-War eras, as well. Some are restored, some are hot rod, and some are as he bought them.

Good selection..

Hey, I am in the market for a good shell to drop a CM into. I'm not stuck on any particular model (no Blues Blaster or cheap stuff), just one that doesn't require a lot of work (I just don't have the spare time to put into a project). Thanks

Anyone know where I can buy the covering material for a Maxi Mouse amp? It looks like naugahyde or something similar. Maybe I will call Lectrosonics and ask them if they can tell me what they used- if there is anyone left from the their team 25 years ago. Any comments would be appreciated.

I blew through a National tremotone last week, really dug it. I did some research and now I'm on the hunt for a couple of rare amps. Anyone have an early National 1X15 or Stage star amp for sale? Know where I might find one? Shot in the dark.

Hohnerjones, Kim Wilson is selling a Stagestar on eBay. Are you looking for a Tremotone? I have two and considering letting one go for the right price.

FYI, the Stagestars have a real clean tone more suited for guitar or clean harp. They don't sound anything like a Tremotone.

I have a Stage Star. I really like it, big tone, closer to a Bassman in sound. Not hard to break it up, add a little treble and it has that nasty sound too, very versatile amp. I also have a 1210 National, BIG tone! Both are pretty rare, good luck.
