It's in D (the Tom Waits original is in E).
It sounds like third position to me.

I say it's Musselwhite too. A pretty distinctive sound to my ears.

It is Musselwhite along with David Lindley and John Hammond on electric slide and dobro.
The same album has the great version of Tom Wait's Way Down in the Hole that was the theme music for the first season of The Wire.
