I was sent these to try and play. Way hard to work with charts for me! The songs are on Spotify and you can buy the album at http://www.akouomusic.com/. Clint Hoover played chromatic on the tracks for the ablum. I got asked to take his place at the album release since he moved.

It is quite the learning curve as these aren't the most diatonic friendly progressions!

My parts are all improv, so I just need to know to navigate the chord changes. Michael Rubin just gave me some notes - totally awesome of him!

I would sure like it if Michael Rubin posted his suggestions!

I haven't heard the songs, but just looking at the charts I would probably start out listening first and then try playing over the changes in each song. My first try would be a G diatonic on "You & Me", G and E on "Worst Case Scenario", E on "Rejoice", C# on "I'm Into You".

Then if I crashed and burned on any song, I would try other harps and combinations of harps until I could get by.

Since you and Michael play diatonic more chromatically than I can, you probably have other ideas. I would like to hear more and hear what you work out!

Mike- Go right to the source. Clint's on FB. I've been taking lessons from him now that he's in Pittsburgh. He asked about you. Give him a shout. He'll be back home for the holidays.

I exchanged emails with Clint and he gave some good insight. Michael was way beyond excellent in helping me digest what was going on. Truely awesome the time he took to explain the charts through the diatonic lense! I am fortunate that he did that for me.

Clint play all chromatic and shared some great insight to how the arrangements together.

So Mike...

Are you going to play these on chromatic, or use diatonics?

If diatonics, would you please let us know which harps you worked out to use for each song?

It would be a learning experience for me, and probably for others, too.

You and Me - not sure. The file I got is only the bass line, so we'll see at rehearsal.

Worst Case Scenario - I can play all the harmonica parts, which are largely over diatonic parts of the progression, in 3rd position on a B harp. That is what Clint used to. Sounds killer.

Rejoice - this one is hardest for me. It is a harmonica song. Clint played chrom the whole song. I can jam on it on a B harp in 12th until the change to EGDF. I need to work on this one.

I Am Into You - I've spend the most time on this. I am trying to do it on chromatic, but my comfort level with scales is limited. If I play the three bars in first with the button it, it works fine. The timing on this tune is tricky for me and I don't hear the D/E very well, but can let go of the button over that part.

Good news is other than rejoice, there are only brief harp parts that are ok to play over. The bad news is I am not as proficient at following the harmonies of each tune as I want to be.

The tunes are all on Spotify save You and Me. If anyone listens to them, I'd love your thoughts. I have mp3's, but don't feel good about sharing them publicly.

Clint gave some good advice and Michael Rubin really coached me up. I just want to nail the changes in Rejoice and sound hip on the chrom with I'm Into You.

"The songs are on Spotify and you can buy the album at www.akuoumusic.com."

Spotify isn't available here and the domain "www.akuoumusic.com" doesn't exist.

Anywhere else to listen to these tunes?

I had it mispelled. Fixed in OP. I don't see it readily listenable other than Spotify, but you get an idea of the vibe.

Gig was last night. For those who were at SPAH 2010, it was the same venue as the blow off. Everytime I've played there, I've had excellent monitor mixes.

Well, last night, there was essentially no monitor mix for anyone other than the B3 player. Four songs total....two went fine, although it was impossible to hear myself...one went fine until the band played the wrong change on the outro, which had me out of key for a bit, and the chromatic tune went fine.

I really wanted to nail the chromatic tune, but it was tricky not hearing myself. I had a great lesson with Michael Rubin to learn to navigate the changes, which was of no issue.

At any rate, the gig was SUPER fun.

Thanks for the update, Mike! It is great that it was a fun gig. I am impressed at how you stepped up to unfamiliar material previously played by Clint Hoover, and how you sought info from Michael Rubin and Clint as you prepared.

Monitoring is so important, and it is so frustrating when you can't hear yourself. In the past I have wrecked reeds due to playing too hard due to poor monitoring issues.

As far as the band missing a change, that is live music for you! I hope I get to hear you play again sometime without going to Minnesota to hear a gig. Are you coming to SPAH this year?

Thanks!!!

My initial plan is to go to SPAH this year. I have vacation I can take, but I have to get it approved later in the spring.

I plan on going just to hangout. If Hohner invites me to jam at their booth again, I would, but otherwise won't search out a performance or seminar (but it someone asked me to, I probably would, lol).
