I am going to request that you seriously consider supporting--with your money and social media reach--a political candidate.
C. Sade (pronounced "Sha-day") Turnipseed is an African American woman running for mayor of Indianola, Mississippi. She is a smart, intense, bluesy, solid, unpredictable (in a good way), culturally aware, and extremely public-spirited person. I've known her for about eight years. She came to a Living Blues symposium here at Ole Miss back in 2004 and totally vibed to what we were doing.
Back in 2010 or so, she brought Billy Branch to Indianola, where he gave away several thousand free harmonicas provided by Hohner to local kids and gave them some basic blues harmonica instruction.
For the past half decade she has been running a kind of Afrocentric community center in Indianola called "House of Khaffre." She just keeps coming at you.
One of her projects involves the creation of a "cotton pickers museum of America" in the heart of the Delta. She figured out that there IS no place in Mississippi, or the Deep South, or America, where the old Cotton Kingdom pays respect to the damned people who picked all that cotton by hand for 250 years.
She is a woman of immense talents and huge spirit. She has very big ideas.
Electing her to the mayoralty of Indianola, home of the B. B. King Museum, will be transformative. She's tough. She makes friends, but she's fearless. I had a long phone conversation a couple of months ago--about an hour--and we don't always agree. But that's why I like her for this particular job. She will wade in and make some big changes.
So I'm asking you to think about doing two things:
1) visit her website and send some PayPal $$$ her way
2) share her campaign homepage with friends who might be interested in supporting a fierce, innovative woman for Mayor of Indianola, Mississippi
