Just wondered who the harp player is. Maybe just someone from the Hi label house band?
No harp content here, but still one of my favorite versions of the song, cryin' shame that the "Blind Owl" wasn't still around to bring something to this Canned Heat version.

I would say it is probably Syl himself. He's a gifted harmonica player as well as singer.

At 2:43 there is a picture of the harp player. Rainman I believe you are correct.

Well there's that. I never even bothered to watch that vid all the way thru. Since I did I noticed he's sporting some interesting bling at 1:45 :)

You may well be right Rainman, but to my ears it sounds a lot like little sonny. Got his vibrato and phrasing going on. He recorded a couple of cool albums on Stax i beleive. Still i'm often wrong on this stuff. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/#!/alprice

Al might be on to something. I am listening to Little Sonny's "The Creeper Returns" and sounds a lot like the harp on Syl's track. He did some stuff in the mid '60s that was released on Enterprise, a subsidiary of Stax, but I can't find any reference to him working with the Hi label, but who knows?

On the "Back in the game" album which included "Take me to the river" Syl is credited with Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic), Harmonica, Primary Artist, Vocals. I'd say it's probably him.

Like a lot of blues songs in the 60's or so, this one was covered- very well indeed!- by David Byrne and Talking Heads, and was a top40 hit for a while. That's where i first heard it. Of course it's always great to hear these songs in their blues form and get more insight into where they have come from. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
