I work in a high school... and I have some realy talented kids there, so I tried to make a school band and enter one realy big competition, there will be 50 bands, it's "rock, blues & jazz" concert in one very popular hall in my town. So, we had a rehearsal, I play harp, my students play everything else, we sound good (we will play blues ofcourse). And when I called organiser, he asked me for a band name... So after 3 days of thinking we didnt came up with anything that sounds good, we have two days left...
When I was young guitar player, I had a same problem with one blues band, every suggestion wasnt good for everyone i band.
My friend's band had a different problem, when they came up with something good, they googled it and realize that there is a band whit that name...
So, what's your experience...? problems with giving names or not?

Communist Lesbian Girl Scout Cookies is an awesome band name!

It's topical, modern, edgy and bound to get some free press too! Might be a little too edgy for a school band though...

Its a good question. now it seems you need a different name than every band in the world. Once it didn't matter, but now it's easy to find out there is another band with that name...and even if it's an Israeli band and you're in New Zealand somehow it's not acceptable to use that name...
Or is it?
It clearly matters if you record, and someone else has recorded using the same name. But I'm not sure it matters very much. Sometimes.
Everytime I think of a name I really like, it's in use. Except...the jelly shakers...which was a snap decision and one I sometimes regret

Nothing new under the sun I suppose.

@Frank- I had no idea about pigmeat. My band is pork themed as well! We are Pork Chops and Ham Hocks. We came up with this because we are all cops aaand our front man already had the nickname of Pork Chops. Most folks we play for don't get it, but those who know us think it's funny.

I like to go for obscure references. I was in a band called Mozart's Other Brother Darryl, and my current (well, if we ever get going again) band is Normsanskill Saxons (the Normanskill is a creek near us; kill means creek in Dutch). At one point, I thought about calling one permutation of friends the 'Stickfigures' (I was the lightest, floating in in the mid-high 200s.) Then the one guy got gastric bypass. Went and ruined a perfectly good name.

So, cultural references work well, but not if they hit you over the head, and it's usually good to tweak them a bit to make them your own. One of the local bands I like is 'The Midnight Society' after a group in a kids show, but since they didn't do anything to differentiate their name, and now another band on FB uses the same name. Place names, blues puns, non-sequiturs. Also, beware the monster that is Google. It can take a name that would have been great in pre-search engine days and turn it into something hard to search- some things just get buried in the results.

As for pleasing everyone, it's hard once you get past a solo act. You might have to resort to some sort of selection process- let everyone submit up to 3 names, let everyone veto one name, and then vote on the rest?

Hey guys, thank you!
@Superbee, that could be a problem when you want to find that band name at youtube... So it's better to be only band with that name. :)
And my idea wasnt realy to ask you for a help with our name but I am happy to see that you guys tried to help us! Thank you! :) We want something with word "blues" in it... My idea was to do something with words: blues, school, class... so my suggestion was "School Of Blues" (like Jack Black's "School of Rock" LOL ), but my students say it sounds like we are twelve years old kids :) other options: "Blues News" (one student suggested that, dunno why... it sounds like a blues magazine), "Blues Philosophers" (my idea, cause we sometimes talk to much (and I love to use philosophy in my lections...).
We know what song we will play (Got My Mojo Working), but we dont have a name...
So, we are running out of time, one day left... :D

Sadly, regarding Mojo, most kids will think of Austin Powers before Muddy. So, if you go with it, you might be the "Yeah Baby" Blues Band (or maybe the Blues Powers).
Probably couldn't get away with Shagalicious Blues Band.
Have fun.

How about "Touch of Class Blues Review"? Or maybe "The Blues High 5" or however many are in the group. Or "The Blues Principals"

Just one suggestion, and please, PLEASE, take it to heart. DO NOT replace the "s" in the band name with a "z"!!! Every damn local band around here seems to feel the need to do this.

Markdc70, sadly, as unhip as that sounds, it is a great way to make a common name more search engine friendly. Of course, you could take it to extremes with a homonym and a z

Blewz Knewz

Or you could play with some symbols since Fun! decided to use punctuation.

Or you could go retro-
Ye Olde Blues Band

or Abbot and Costello-
'It's Banned on the Radio'

Attach "Jam Band" or "Blues Band" to the back of the school name. That's what my band did.
