A few years ago a young man dropped into our local open mic in Michigan and brought the house down playing flat-picked guitar like he was channeling Doc Watson, and singing like it too. He came back a number of times and was always gracious and generous about inviting others to join him. Eventually the inevitable happened and he teamed up with a local (very good) Mandolin player with lots of experience and they've been touring as a duo to regional acclaim, and even got hired for a house concert in California earlier this year. They continue to play a weekly gig at a local tavern called "Lil Bo's".

His name is William Apostol and he uses the stage name "Billy Strings". His partner is Don Julin. Just this week they got Madcat Ruth up to the area to join them for their regular Thursday night gig. I'm working out of town and couldn't be there, but fortunately somebody captured this outstanding video. Much better than your typical cellphone video, with very clear close-ups of Madcat that reveal his techniques with his hands and the microphone. Great music and an education to go with it!

(BTW, Billy plays a pretty good rack harp.)

Enjoy.

No harp in this video, but it's worth watching if you enjoy bluegrass. Billy & Don playing at a TEDx conference this year. Keep watching and you'll see that Billy is quite a bit more animated than your typical bluegrass guitarist. He's a fun performer to watch; in fact in this video he's more sedate than usual.
