A cool video for your Sunday morning browsing.

Last night at Ziggies:

Two years ago Nic walked into Guitar Center and bought this amp, a bone stock 60-watt Fender Deville 410. Nothing has been changed, not even a tube. No pedals or effects of any kind.

Getting good tone out if a stock Deville with zero pedals or mods is very hard. The amp is not mic'ed up. Nic is an amazing talent.

"Sitting in" But surely Rick you're standing up?? :)

Seriously though, Nic is getting some good tone out of that amp and proving once again that it's always the Indian and never the bow.

Kingley, I agree with you about the amp and the true source of tone, but I need to add that I've heard Nic play many different amps and he sounds better on a good harp amp than he does on this Deville.

To my ear the Deville in this video gives a kind of narrow "ooooh" sound while I prefer a wider "aaaah" sound. The breakup is a little stiff. Not sure you can hear all that in the video but I could in the room last night. It is surely a testament to Nic's immense skill that it sounds this good.

Uh, when I played the amp (see photo above) it sounded different. Not sure why...

I like those amps. If a player has good sound and technique, they sound really good. If not, they sound really bright, brittle and thin.

Kim puts a couple pedals and a preamp in front of the Devilles. But you knew that, Tom.

I was inspired by Aki Kumar's video about his modified DeVille. I think it served as the house harp amp at his Grand Dell Saloon jam.
They are a lot more common and cheaper in Aus than RI Bassman. Aki's amp wasn't altered very much: 4 resistors and 2 tubes.

That's why Kim uses the DeVilles-they are plentiful, sound good, and require few mods to be good harp amps.

I was at a concert seems like 10 years ago and we were walking from the parking lot to the stage...it was a far walk- suddenly I started hearing harmonica blastin through air- it took us 20 min to get to the stage and Kim was still playing when we finally arrived - The Tbirds were opening for someone that night - I bet - he gets a hell of a natural high by those prolonged harp solos and the band gets to relieve themselves on the side of the stage :)

When Kim Wilson played a festival here a couple years ago he had the two Deville amps, with an ART preamp and a couple of Kinder pedals. The sound was awesome, and really loud.

I was curious if the amps were customized so I contacted the festival promoter who put me in touch with the sound company that provided the Devilles at Kim's request. The owner of the sound company told me the amps were completely stock and were returned unmolested.

"The owner of the sound company told me the amps were completely stock and were returned unmolested."

You spoke to the wrong people-Kim would never request that the supplier perform tube swaps etc-that is handled Steve,Kims roadie. They would have no idea that Steve had swapped the tubes, and then swapped them back.

I am telling you this because I witnessed it first hand, and spoke to Steve about it.

A 12AU7 in V1? Wow, that would really change the nature of the amp.

I believe Steve swapped the preamp 12AX7 in V1 with a 12AT7-

I have played several DeVilles. I like um, stick w/ the clean chnl. They will get big and phat. They need room to breath or they're too touchy. Good amp...Cheep, but most need some work on the boards. I still like um...BN

Val King said he changed resistor (R3 ) "on the input to the grid" from 1meg to 4.7meg in Aki's amp.
Also changed the 2 (1/2watt) plate resistors (R4 and R11) on the 1st preamp stage from 100k to 120k.

Without reading the posts and just listening to the video, my first reaction was that I wasn't crazy about the sound of that amp.

Without reading the posts and just listening to the nic clark video, my first reaction was that I wasn't crazy about the sound of that amp. Nic is fantastic and has incredible tone. But the amp sounded a little dull and lacked the richness and overtones of the modded bandmaster he usually plays.
