After blowing out my A Blues master after many hours I bought the delta frost reed plate/ comb replacement and installed the cover plates,I noticed that both reed plates had the same amount of holes, but the delta had only 3 screws, the center triangle if you will, whereas the Suzuki plates had all seven screws in all 7 holes. I put one of the screws into the open holes and the bottom plate does not seem to be threaded, the screw does not seem to catch.

1,do I need the extra screws ? ,and 2, If do, if i push hard enough will they self tap?

By the way the bushman plates seem to play a little stiffer and sound a little different but is that because they are brand new,or just because no two combs/ reed plates are exactly the same?

I haven't played either harp, but more screws doesn't mean better. As long as your comb and reed plates you should be good, and, in fact, pushing hard could cause some warping. Generally speaking, 3 is a good number for points of contact for lots of things. 1 point, things can twist, two points, there still can be torque if you snag a corner, but by the time you get to three you are in pretty good shape because any force applied will be countered along a couple of axis. (I probably am not explaining that well.) Don't over tighten, because that can warp things too. Forcing screws in to a narrow piece of wood is also a good way to split the wood. If you feel you need more screws, pre-drill.

Also, yeah, there can be a big difference in the response between old and new reeds, or even just two reed plates that have the same amount of use based on how they are gapped.

John Hall posted on his forum about 3 years ago that his harmonicas were no longer being made by Suzuki. He was emphatic that the new factory was not in China. I only own 3 Delta Frosts, 2 were given to me by rbeetsme at a bluesfest, I bought the 3rd from him later. Mine are 9 years old so maybe the new ones are different.

I believe the holes are tapped, they are just tight the first time you put a screw into them. It's not obvious whether you are overtightening or just getting over that first-time resistance. They are tapped because there is no metal scraped off as when you use a self-tapping screw (or a real tap).

Maybe screw in through-and-through once with the reedplate off the comb and then reassemble?

A new set of reedplates will probably play differently because there is so much variability between harps. Also, they may gap the harp at the factory but they probably don't gap the reed plates before they ship. So there may be one less step in the process.

I ordered a harp and a set of reedplates from John Hall last year. Got the reedplates. In Canada, Suzuki harps and reedplates are much cheaper anyway. That's the retail price, not the dealer price. Rockin Rons also distributes Delta Frost, I think... I would buy from him, too if I lived in the US.

RockinRons, I believe, no longer carries Delta Frost harmonicas, although I believe he has DF replacement reeds still in stock.

To my knowledge, the only source now for DF reedplates is Sweetwater Music. They seem to have them in stock. I've bought a couple from them. $20 with free shipping. Anyone else is working off of back stock, as I understand it.

groyster, before you make any disparaging remarks toward eharp, you might want to check out the eharp/Chuck Norris comparison thread from a few years back!

it is my understanding that china
is the largest harmonica producer on the planet
so if anyone is shocked or dismayed.. get over it

do not be surprised if your favorite harmonica
is made in china and perhaps
assembled in germany
