what are we able to do with a song published say in 1948 and then 'renewed' in 1975 as many of the older published songs are these days
this issue has been on the forum before i think but i would like some current understanding of it
for example, i hear one of these songs on a video, can i write it out in harmonic tab and put it on the forum?
how about if i transcribe it into music notation and add harmonica tab underneath?
how far does 'fair use' go?
crikey, am i creating trouble simply by talking about this on the forum?

That's a good question. My understanding is a lot of the tab sites have to get licenses to post tabs for currently copyrighted music. Copyright is a crazy subject. In the U.S. it's been pushed from 5-7 years to life+70 years. How that is supposed to encourage people to write without stifling expression, I'm not sure.
Of course, not everything was written under those rules. Here is a link that may be helpful, although it might just make your head explode instead.

Don't worry about it. If they don't like it, they'll ask you to cease and desist. If there's no real money involved, it's not a problem.

yes, FMWoodeye, i thought that but i was being wary, not only for myself
if i was putting something up for sale i would expect to have to negotiate rights but not if i am only being 'helpful' on a forum
nevertheless, there has been talk, on this forum and elsewhere about the troubles caused by copyright
this would be the sensible solution but there has been a lot which is not sensible
just trying to do the right thing in a world which cannot agree on what is 'fair use'
