Measuring the output of Nic Clark's Turner mic to match it better with his custom amp.

Sounds like he's trying to cup a feel...

Great to see two experts at work. I assume that's Bruce correct? Is that a new mission amp he's playing? What model is it? Any special tweaks to this amp?
The mic looks like an elctrovoice.

On a scale from 1 to where its at, cupping is a 13.

Greg, I take it that the cupping caused a spike in the voltage by way of compression.

Yes, that is Bruce Collins on the left. The mic Nic is playing is a Shure 545S, a "Paul Butterfield Mic."

The amp is a custom version of the Mission Chicago 32-20. It makes 44 watts and has three 10-inch speakers. It sounds wicked.

Bruce finished the amp three weeks ago just in time for Nic to use it at the Greeley Blues Jam, a big festival in Northern Colorado. We met up at Bruce's shop yesterday to tweak everything based on what Nic has learned about the amp since them.

It was kind of funny but very impressive: Nic said something like, "I love the tone but I want a little more presence on low single notes bent, like John Nemeth."

Bruce said, "Okay" and made a circuit change that nailed it. After that it was like being at the eye doctor and getting glasses, where the doc tries lots of different lenses and asks, "Which is better, this or this?"

Then we tried the amp with each of Nic's three favorite mics: The Shure 545S, a Turner, and an old JT-30 with ceramic element. They made sure the amp had a sweet spot for what Nic was looking for in each mic.

The cool thing is, you don't have to be a future superstar like Nic Clark to get that kind of service from Bruce Collins. He's done that for both my Mission amps, and for my Bassman!

Blueswannabe, that is exactly it. Nic plays relatively low volume but his mics produce a ton of output, way more than we expected. It is the cupping and also the amount of low frequency energy he generates with his tongue slaps and big tone.

Rick, it would be an interesting experiment to get voltage readings from several harp players using the same equipment. There might be some constructive feedback one could get from that.
