Adam, just FYI:

Your hosting is unavailable for many IP addresses in Russia. There was a discussion in Russian vk.com social network groups on this issue.
I guess your hosting has just blacklisted several million people there.

Should I (once again) offer a merge for a real forum software and hosting?

Real forum sw! Death to the world's worst captcha system! Searchability! Thread subscription! You get my vote.....

If you do just PLEASE leave it all in one forum - not a million subforums that I have to review to see what's going on, and can never choose just the right one for my next post......

As I initially offered, there can be a multi-thread/subforum system that automatically mirrors each and every topic to a "free rolling threads" general forum like what you see here.

Besides, there's always the "view new content" button that does just the same with filtering out the topics you have already read.

Nothing wrong with this forum or it's software.

If the Russians are being blocked, it's probably for a good reason.

For some reason, I'm actually awaiting that someone starts throwing something else... as it happens here quite often.

I think the Jim's idea could simplify the forum, look and usability.

Without having to scroll through the forum rules (in bold) before seeing the new content.

I think if Adam still owns and maintains the forum, then I don't see why not. Just my opinion.

Agree wholeheartedly with Jaybird (and couldn't have said it better). I don't know if MBH membership opinion carries any weight with Kudzu on this (or if he's even considering it), but if it does, my vote is don't change nothin'.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

+1 on that.

The forum works, not in a perfect way but it works, is the same whit harps: none of my harps ares customs harps, but I work hard to make it sound good, it wuould be easy whit a custom harp? yes, but I am OK whit the challenge.

Jim, I've just submitted an error request about this. (It includes this and Jodanchudan and Kingly's problems too- I've had a hectic week). Maybe with a few different reports they can cross check to see what the problem is. It's beyond my access level to troubleshoot. I'll let Adam know about the problem too.

For reference, the links to the other two recent access threads are here:

http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/5421250.htm

http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/5426067.htm

I don't know if they are related issues or not.

edit: Jim, do you have a link to that discussion? It might be useful for the MacWebsiteBuilder guys for trouble shooting.

As a side note, I don't remember ever having problems with Russian addresses being spammers or anything. Just about every Chinese address turns out to be a spammer though. It's a shame that some countries let spam happen. It's a few quick bucks at the expense of credibility for all the companies and individuals in those countries that really do want to do legitimate business, like this Nigerian Prince who is funding my latest harmonica invention!

I doubt that discussion will be of any use.
Those were mostly users from Moscow. Using a proxy helped some of them.

I'd like to introduce a motion to adopt Sharia Law for internet web-crimes. From henceforth, I submit that when caught the mouse-hand of hackers and spammers be cut off.
Can I get an 'amen'.....

Nate,

I just got back from China and found I could not access this forum without using a VPN tunnel back to the US, and sometimes not even then. Do we have any members from China? Is the access form China a similar problem to the Russian access, or is the "Great Firewall" keeping MBH out of China?

I've been in Kazakhstan for the last 10 days and gave had no trouble accessing this site from my computer, tablet, and phone using a local WiFi account. I'm currently sitting in Frankfurt airport using my 30 minutes of free WiFi and having no troubles.
The lack of access that stme58 had in China is likely due to state censorship (notorious in China). I wonder if our muscovite friends are experiencing a similar issue (I.e. a general state firewall that has the effect of blocking access to some other sites inadvertently?) That they can connect through a proxy would seem to support that hypothesis.

@ stme58 - I lived in Beijing for three months in 2006. I had no access at all to "foreign" forums or chats. We had a blog that was supposed to keep friends and families posted about our stay there but we couldn't use it...

Your problem is most definetly about "the great firewall". Were you able to access foreign news-sites?

Furthermore I agree with Superbee- "If it's broke, Fix it!"

Pistolkatt,

I was able to access Yahoo News, Honk Kong version, in China. I was connecting from either a hotel that catered to westerners or the China office of an American company so I don't think my experience was the same that a typical Chinese person would have.

I agree the forum software is pretty poor quality. However I do like it being unified...ie. if another forum starts up, there'll be a splintering of users which won't help anyone. So it's probably better for Adam to maintain ownership and fully replace this one, if anything happens at all.

I think mentioning Robert Johnson and the "facts" about his soul selling activities should bring kudzurunner out of hiding :P

I'm not in hiding. I'm just good at delegating authority. Nate has submitted a helpdesk request. That's good enough for me.

62% of the traffic for this entire website--102,000 pageviews a month, out of a total of 165,000 pageviews a month--comes from the forum homepage, and another 5% of the website's traffic comes from the second and third page of the forum. That's two-thirds of MBH's total traffic. The homepage and beginner's page get 9% and 5% of the traffic, respectively. This forum, for better or worse and creaky and outdated as it may be, is the lifeblood of MBH. It drives everything, including my google rankings. I have no intention of messing with it. I have no intention of farming out any portion of it.

Some of us are old enough to remember the disaster that transpired when Coke, back in the late 70s (as I recall), updated Coke as "new Coke." The reaction was so immediate and so negative that within two weeks they had retreated--and, very wisely, rebranded old Coke as "Coke classic." A brilliant move made out of necessity in a moment of crisis. I hope, through flagrant inaction, to avoid that sort of crisis. I believe that in this case, leaving well enough alone is the best policy. Think of this forum as the corner watering-hole or tavern. It's good to be able to walk through the swinging doors and know that you'll encounter familiar sights and sounds. If this forum becomes the McSorley's Tavern of harmonica forums--known for not changing its basic outlines, locked in a time warp, but still inviting, still thrumming with energy for all that--then that's just fine with me.

This forum has somehow managed to remain rollicking and vital, despite its technological limitations. It's possible that that's because there's a category resonance between this forum and...oh, I don't know. An off-the-shelf Marine Band harp?

Keep on trucking!

I would have to agree with both sides here, as much as I hate fence-sitting, but I think "If it aint broke, don't fix it" only applies to something that works flawlessly.

I have seen numerous complaints and fallen victim myself to the menacing Captcha creature. I would love to know how many opinions or ideas have not been posted/shared due to Captcha "timing out".

Don't get me wrong, I'm so flippen grateful for this forum, as there is not a single person near me who plays or knows anything about blues harmonica. It's invaluable!

P.S. Adam, I was teasing about the whole hiding and RJ thing. Haha.
Please don't ban me :P

I've got a request from support,

"Would it be possible for you to ask the people who are experiencing loading/reloading issues what ISP they are using as well as their current IP? They can get their IP at www.whatismyip.com. Also, can you ask them if they encounter any issues on other parts of the site or is it just in the message boards?"

That should help them diagnose the problem.

As for the New Coke thing... that was 1985! (I wouldn't have nearly as strong memories of it if it had been the 70's. My first memories of something from the outside world were Jimmy Carter being elected and boycotting Nestle (they were, and still do give out free samples of baby formula in the third world (where it is mixed with unsafe water) just long enough to get the mother's to stop lactating, and then start selling it.) I don't really have any other memories that aren't household memories from the 70's. By '85 I was a precocious middle schooler who was devastated by the New Coke switch! (I've got a Coke machine in my living room, and a sign, and a clock, and a bank, and a bunch of other knick knacks- the big stuff was my idea, my family keeps adding small things. I'm actually interested in old advertising more than coke specifically.) :)
