Hi folks! I recently got to the dentist again after several years w/out insurance... They took a lot of x-rays because it's been so long, and I, being an archaeologist, of course asked if they could e-mail them to me, which they did. I was playing around with the images, zooming in and looking at my roots and all that, when it occurred to me that this was a great band logo ready to be had! So about 15 minutes of messing around in GIMP (free open source imagery program much like photoshop), I came up with this nifty new logo for my OMB:

one harp x-ray logo

Now, all I gotta do is get the time to actually play out again!!!

PS: 8 years since the last dental exam, and no cavities!!! :)

Cool idea. I might change the shading on some of the X-Rays to balance the colors across the image, and maybe soften the focus a little bit. If you put that flier on a table in a coffee house it might be a little too medical for some people's taste! You might also want to clean up the edges of the lettering. The font is much lower resolution than the pictures, although you only really see it on the letters with diagonals. :)

Still, I think you have a winner there. It certainly catches people's attention.

Thanks Nate! Yeah, this is a rough and ready version I just slapped together. I would have re-done the lettering from scratch, but I seem to have lost my cool stencil font the last time I upgraded my system (the joys of linux computing!), so I just copied and pasted from a lower-res image I already had...

Good idea about balancing the levels... The harp is a normal photo where I inverted the colors, played with the thresholds, and turned to greyscale. Soft focus might be cool too, but I kinda like all the gorey details! :)

also, I might move the teeth closer to the harp, so it looks more "clamped" in there...

Be fun if next time you went into the dentist's, ask them if they'd be willing to snap a frontal shot with you clenching a harp in your teeth. They might very well do it.

Okay, here's one with the teeth together... I dunno... I kinda like the other one better... It's got that straight from the dental exam room vibe, and I think that medical aspect is kinda cool... Thoughts?

@lumpy: Hmmm... They show up for me... Their just linked from my dropbox... I'm not sure why they wouldn't show for you?

@hawkeye: I definitely thought about it, but I do have a deductible, and I already had to pay $80 for just these "normal" ones anyway! :)

Okay, one more with the teeth clamped even more on the harp, and some transparency between 'em.... Last one, I promise!

I like the clamping ones, but agree with Nate that they are a bit medical. Is there a way to obscure the roots a bit? Makes me think of root canals and such...
If it looked kinda like a skull chomping on a harp that would be cool, IMHO.

Just so we're clear, since there is a lot of instruction going on on this site, this is not a proper embouchure. Aside from the fact it might damage your teeth to bite it like that, the harmonica also goes the other way round (unless you have one of those two sided harps!)

:)

Don't want to worry you Isaac but my orthodontal training makes me suspect you may have the early signs of an abcess on the upper right 1 and 2. If I were you I'd start saving for implants or dentures. Only kidding :)

Seems to be having it's intended effect! :)

@nate: Actually, the harp is in there the right way round... The perspective is actually from *inside* the mouth... But that last one does have an optical illusion that makes it seem like it's from outside... i.e., the "Cujo" effect astutely described by Hawkeye! :) In all seriousness, however, if you think about it, that last image is pretty darn close to what one might see if one could take an x-ray from inside the mouth while playing...

PS, you can clearly see in that image that I'm playing the 3-6 octave! ;)

Lol. My bad. I guess without molars I didn't pick up the visual cue that those were the back of the teeth.

If you want to get a bit more of an early blues vibe to the logo, perhaps you could photoshop out a tooth or two!
