Chicago Tribune jazz critic Howard Reich must have a soft spot for
harmonica players. He's been promoting Howard Levy in his columns for
years now and lately has been on the Sugar Blue bandwagon. I particularly
enjoyed this piece from a couple of days ago:

Tmf, wow, the spam filter went crazy on you! Sorry about that. It seems to catch posts that are mostly a link. We can't turn the damn thing off. :(

If it doesn't show one of your posts after a couple tries, try looking to see if you are doing anything in particular that might trigger it. Make your post a little longer per link.

edit: Don't feel too bad. It got a couple of Kingly's posts too.

Yeah I noticed the other day that when I posted in a thread "Impressive collection" it spammed the post. Yet when I changed it to "Impressive collection of mics" it deemed that to be fine. Weird!

Most remarkable..,
"After taking this Wednesday off to tour, Sugar Blue resumes his weekly engagement at 9 p.m. on April 3 at Rosa's Lounge, 3420 W. Armitage Ave.; $10; 773-342-0452 or rosaslounge.com"

If you live in Chicago you can go see Sugar Blue every Wednesday night for 10 bucks.

Wow!, not only a monster bass player, but she's a doctor too. I thought her bass playing was PHD quality jazz.

Apropos of nothing, but a couple of weeks ago I decided that I'm going to turn the Top 10 list on this website into a Top 11 and add Sugar Blue to that top tier. He has extraordinary technique--and had it by the mid-1980s, before several new generations of speedsters came along; an immediately identifiable sound; a completely original approach. He's the quintessential modern blues harmonica player--or was, before Jason came along--and I see him as an apt successor to Little Walter in that role. SB broke the game wide open. You don't have to love his sound or approach to recognize that. I also think he's had a great deal to do with modernizing the sound of the contemporary Chicago blues ensemble, acknowledging the huge role of funk and rock in the past forty years. Cotton took things part way; Sugar Blue took them all the way. More than any other player I can think of, Sugar's updatings of classic Chicago repertoire such as "Messin' With the Kid" and "Hoochie Coochie Man" show us the meaning of the word "modernize" as applied to straight-ahead blues.

Just wanted to let y'all know.

Loads of praise for Sugar Blue........ I was watching a YouTube video of him and his band. Great harp playing but what really blew me away was his wife's bass playing? Ilaria Lantieri absolutely amazing! Really funky lines, really tight. Congratulations to both of them!
