@Tooka Yes, I think it's about the right time. Maybe you could try a different approach this time. Not a new idea, but have a best blues lick (or any harp lick competition, if you want to broaden the scope)and restrict the length of the video entry to say 30 seconds max. Without backing maybe as it would make it easier for some to produce a video.
I know Adam`s challenge last year was different in that it involved replicating one of his licks, but I was amazed at the number of entries (many from new and unheard of members.) So maybe short and focused is the key to more entries.
I think that an unspecified video length and type can offer perhaps too much scope and that can lead to uncertainty of choice as to what to settle on and what kind of production it's going to be and then ultimately if it's going to be acheivable etc., which may end up with no video being entered at all.
BTW this is not a criticism of past competitions which have been great and Jodans winning entry last year was terrific. Rather it's a suggestion to encourage more participation.
You could suggest the lick be an original creation rather than a direct note for note copy of a famous lick. Any entries over the 30 second mark would not be eligible.
I know what you mean GOPA. 30 seconds sounds appealing. The reason the last BYBO was left open to virtually anything, was that there was so much arguing and time wasted deciding on how it should be run. Some didn't like the idea it was a "competition", some didn't like the idea it was a "challenge", some didn't like the fact that some were leisure players up against seasoned pros. It really got out of hand and what I thought would be just a pleasurable diversion and a reason for those of us who don't gig regularly to have a little fun and set ourselves a goal to work towards, became a chore which caused a lot of ill feeling.
Anyway maybe a "Quick Lick Flick" limited to 30 seconds is the way to go. If I get time over the next day or so, I'll test the temperature with a post and see if I can set the wheels in motion if there are sufficient positive responses.
"Quick Lick Flick" :) I like that tooka, you have yourself a working title.
Yes, I reckon you're never going to please everyone.
With such a broad spectrum of skill levels on a forum such as this you could have the dilemma where leisure players would feel threatened by possible entries from experienced players and experienced players might hold back because they're sensitive to this or they don't want to run the risk of being outvoted by someone below their skill level.
I can understand your hesitation because it must be a thankless task to put all the hard work in organising something like this and only to get a lukewarm response or griping.
I like the emphasis on the entries being a fun thing to do and that the overall winner is not the best player in the Forum, World, Universe, it's just a way of sharing your own unique riff.
And just think how many neat riffs there might be to 'borrow' from the quick Lick Flicks entries!!
