Last week i was invited to play on the community radio "mostly folk" show. this was because i'd been spotted busking at the Cygnet Folk Festival...

so we went over and eventually played 7 songs. the guy sent me a file of the show and i'm just editing out the songs into separate files.

I'm afraid this is very rough and ready. the sound quality is a bit harsh, clipping the studio mics. if you cant listen all the way through, its cool...

anyway, heres the first one i'm willing to share. I dunno why i'm sharing it really...just to make me face my shortcomings probably, so please do point them out

File may take a moment to appear
its just a pretty much straight cover of Billy Boy Arnold's track on Back Where I Belong....

As a teacher I video myself and there's nothing more brutal or helpful.
It will help if you post the link though...:)

I think it's there, just takes a few moments to appear. I mean, I'm on my phone right now and I can still access it.

My thoughts

Awesome to get on the radio live! Also edited to add I made it through to the end.

My criticisms are basic. Work on phrasing, relax as best you can I get it was an awkward environment. It is repetitive and you can get a similar feel with a bit more vitality if you perhaps introduce slight changes to the basic riff throughout the duration.

The criticisms I listed are things I battle too. Phrasing and dynamics are what separates competent and pretty good and truly great.

I record all of my practice with my cellphone these days as it helps focus on areas you miss when actually playing. It underlines all of my mistakes and helps me zero in on my faults of which I have several. My worst offense is playing way many staccato runs and way to aggressive to often.

Thanks Will! The repetition aspect of this does make me wonder a little. We have only played it a few times, which is why its pretty much stuck on the template. On the day I remember I hit that opening riff pretty hard, and sounds like it stayed that way pretty much throughout.
Maybe gonna play it with bass and drums this weekend at the Forth Blues Festival playoffs. Different guitarist so like starting afresh in a way. Any particular section you think I need to scrub up? I know I struggle a bit with that wailing section between verses...

I honestly think after giving it another listen the previously mentioned things are the most important.

The wailing portion could do with some polish just working out how to make it happen with good tone. I'd screw around with it a little.

The one thing that I am thinking about is pace. If it were a bit faster I think it would pull it together quite a bit.

If you played with your pacing and the groove you totally are close to the "tequilla song" champs sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdMTl9zHQ9Y&sns=em

Good aussie blues there Bee.
I'd say the same as Willspear.I know that the riff is the song..but maybe the same riff played on another Octave would help to keep it interesting?
I think too that drums 'n bass are pretty crictical to this song so maybe that'll help next week. You'll hopefully have a nice groove to play off.

4 goes at capcha ..a record.

I can imagine this with a full band; it would kick arse.

Hey SuperBee, I liked that. Had a nice raw sound, but not to rough. I thought you held your phrasing together very nicely. Thanks for posting & congrats on getting "on air".

Thanks so much to all who've taken the time to listen and comment. It is really much appreciated!
It's great to have the opportunity to get some feedback from this community.
I posted another clip from the session in a separate thread (Early in the Morning). A somewhat different feel.
