The other discussion on 3d printing got me to poking around. Stumbled on a site where users share their 3d printer projects. You can contribute and you can download the CAD files.

Not quite a comb but hey, it's harmonica related. Attaches to a mic stand and holds your bullet mic. It's going in the right direction!

I wish I was better at CAD. I've played around with it a few times and haven't been able to get the hang of it.

I was talking with my mother the other day. She works with schools down in the Syracuse part of NYS, and she was saying one of the communities has a public 3D printing center, just like other communities would have an art center or a library.

What I'd like access to is a 3D scanner. I'm decent at making things out of clay. If I could make it out of clay and then translate that into CAD I think I could do something pretty cool. I've seen some DIY projects to turn a camera into a 3D scanner, but they aren't like the high end ones.

@Nate: You don't need a 3-D scanner. You just need a digital camera, some time, and some software.

I've used several of these pieces of software to make 3-d digital models of stuff (typically archaeology stuff). The techniques is more specifically referred to as "structure from motion", and there is actually quite a lot of free/open source tools to do it. It's getting pretty accurate too!

Check out these 3D-printed guitars I saw at NAMM. It was more of a proof of concept thing than anything else, but cool nonetheless. The spider-webby one has spiders on the inside....

Isaac, cool! Getting someone to print a plastic doohickey for me could be just the boost my inner mad scientist needs. Off to the internets for other essential parts!

That brings me to an interesting question about wireless rigs... What standard are they broadcast over, and do they have room to broadcast other data?
