Folks:

I've had very busy days yesterday and today, but it has just come to my attention that the forum software has been changed. I have no idea why this has happened. I received no email alert from Macwebsitebuilder.

As you know, I've resisted various offers to relocate and/or significantly change the forum, but I'll say right now, for the record: losing the ability to edit my/our posts is something that I consider intolerable. If it's a temporary thing, I'm fine with it. If, on the other hand, it is a deliberate and permanent change on the part of Macwebsitebuilder, then I will indeed take my business--and this forum--elsewhere.

The bad news is, I won't have time to do that for the next several months.

I just want you to know that even I have a bottom line as far as forum functioning go. Our posts need to be editable. If they're not, we'll take this thing elsewhere.

NOTE: Please do NOT email me with suggestions about where we might relocate. I'm not open to any suggestions right now. You'll just antagonize me if you do that, in fact.

[edited to add: If I sign in as an administrator, as I am right now, I can edit my posts. That means that five forum members have that capacity: not adequate. I have contacted the Macwebsitebuilder helpdesk and asked if the lost of forum edit function is a temporary outage and, if so, how long the outage will last. I'll keep you posed.]

I thought i could still edit. This is a test.

First post attempt verified another problem already reported. If you enter the wrong captcha code (which, because some of their images are so bloody ambiguous is easy to do) you lose your entire post.

And yes edit is broken. I'm sure that's a bug with the new version that they will fix.

Until they fix it, there is a workaround: You can still delete your own posts, so if you need to edit, copy and paste into a new post, make your edits before posting and then delete your old post.

Since we seem to be using this thread to post clues/symptoms of the change, anyone else notice that the timing of thread posts seems to be off? I think I recall this happening once before, where you make a post, and then your thread is immediately third or fourth down the list, instead of on top...

yup. just happened again with that last post. This thread should have bumped to the top, but instead was at number three. No chance that that could be due to two other threads being posted in at the exact same time...

That's been happening for me since at least December. One time, my post ended up above the post I was responding to.

I wonder if it has something to do with how long you've been logged in.

Huh, I hadn't noticed that. Or maybe how long you've had the particular page open?

Funny how posting lets us present the self we want to be. This means we can edit. And if we wish to, we can delete.

The support desk at Macwebsitebuilder has just informed me that they have recognized and fixed the no-edit-function problem. It does indeed seem to be working!

Yipee!

Before I write back and tell them that everything is copasetic, I need all of you to try and replicate the various recent technical difficulties that we've been experiencing here. Please do that and report back to me. Let's hope nobody finds anything worth reporting.

I will now enter the wrong captcha.

I am now editing to say that my text was not lost.

I am editing again to say the thread moved back to the top after I posted in it.

I just lost a comment to a stale captcha a few minutes ago (well, I was able to back page and get it, but the Captcha time out did remove the text from my post on the 'you got it wrong page'.)

edit: Edit seems to be working. The spam filter seems to be a touch to sensitive. This thread:

http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/5248200.htm?page=1

Got picked off. I restored it when I saw it in the folder, but since it was time sensitive, it was probably too late.

I see an issue in which you take a while to write your post, the current spam prevention code times out, you get taken to a page to enter a new spam prevention code, the text you originally written correctly carries over, when you enter the new spam code your post is successfully submitted. But, everything you wrote in your post disappears.

I do enough code testing at work to test MacWebsiteBuilder code at home, they should do their own testing, lol.

Message to powers that be: Been harpin' on it for years now. This SW's CAPTCHA system is the WORST of any site I use. And I use lots of sites that have captcha. Frequently ambiguous images are presented (is that an a or an o for example) and then there's the time out issue. Other systems have much more legible captcha codes AND an obvious way to generate a new one without losing anything.

Greg, and that's only half the story! And the spam filter is picking off random comments.

Arzajac, if you happen by this thread, check your email. I'm still testing a theory. It may not be as bad as I thought.

I noticed I lost a post using the backpage technique. I backpaged, saw my text, solved the new captcha, which it accepted, and then didn't get a post. So, another odd workaround seems to be to post a blank text, make sure you get the captcha and then edit your post by writing it!
