This late-life clip of Norton Buffalo has been talked about here before, but it deserves periodic resurrection. He's a double threat on chromatic and diatonic, all in the same solo, and his speed, rhythmic precision, and soulfulness make him the very definition of "the guy you don't want to find yourself cutting heads with onstage." He's a great example of a modern player who isn't particularly beholden to Chicago/West Coast stylistics and doesn't need a special mic or amp. (Yes, he's playing a "harp mic" here, a Shure dynamic mic, but he appears to be playing it through the PA.) He's just a hard-core throwdown artist. Please feel free to post other clips and/or link to earlier threads:
Norton had a couple of large cases of diatonics and a bank of chromatics. I always found him to be incredibly versatile...good leads, good rhythm, good vocalist. A great player to study if you like to play in a variety of styles.
Roy and Norton's collaboration took place between other projects for at least 20-25 years.
He's the only well known player in the Western Hemisphere that I know of that preferred Huang diatonics.
