If I'm reading this correctly, the video below was uploaded on November 7th. Today is November 12th. 4,155,777 hits as I post this. Is that right? I feel unclean watching this video:

You'd think with that many hits it would at least have a good harmonica part (though I have to admit I didn't watch the whole thing, so maybe it did and I missed it). Are there 4 million 13 year old boys watching this thing or just 200,000 watching it over and over and over......

At least it's not Gangnam Style. It reminds me much more of Rebecca Black. I've already posted a couple rants around the web about rich parents who can pay for studio time for their kids as a business expense and write off the loss (although this obviously if they did it right won't be a loss!) I think my landlord did that. We all got CD's of his daughters CD for one Christmas. The studio was listed on his business page and seems to have only produced her very average- generic-never-make-it's-money-back-Christmas-classics-covers album, but I bet he took it as a tax write off.

(It wasn't a horrible album, although with auto-tune it's hard to make a terrible covers album today.)

looks like it was made by the same producer who brough us "Friday" by Rebecca Black:

Basically, rich families can just pay to have him make a music video for their child. It's one of the strangest, post-modern, approaches to fame I've ever seen...

Ah, yes. Another shining example of what youtube hath wrought. I didn't actually watch the video, but kudzu's remarks made me curious as to what the insane viral explosion of it was all about.

A little, and I mean very little, internet research turned up this, from examiner.com. Judge for yourself.

-----------------------------------

"Who is Nicole Westbrook? The world is about to find out, thanks to cheesy star maker Patrice Wilson.

Westbrook is the latest incarnation of the "Rebecca Black" effect Wilson unleashed on the viral video community, challenging his former protege with a stunningly awful new music video called "It's Thanksgiving."

Uploaded to YouTube on Thursday, the video tries to cash in on Rebecca Black's surprise hit "Friday" by incorporating all of the structural elements of the insistent musical earwig which launched Black's career, with none of its innocent charms.

To be fair, Nicole Westbrook, who looks to be about 14, is an attractive young lady with a modestly pleasant voice. She may have had a shot at fame through more traditional channels, but it looks as though her handlers are taking the "easy" way out.

Video: Nicole Westbrook - It's Thanksgiving
The tune panders to many of the formulaic constructions well known to ensure haphazard traffic: a simple dance beat, uncomplicated, repetitive hooks, mindless lyrics and sugar sweet tweens acting all grown up. And, oh yeah, a holiday theme never hurts.

It's so obvious Patrice Wilson is trying to catch lightning in a bottle once again, but this time it fails spectacularly. Which might have been the whole point.

And, Wilson himself makes an appearance, inappropriately crashing a Thanksgiving feast hosted by Westbrook and her pals. Looking like a prison escapee sporting a turkey hat, he even has the audacity to sit at the head of the table after barging in to the kids-only party.

When Nicole Westbrook starts the obligatory rap sequence after a couple of inane verses, with a turkey leg standing in for a microphone, one can't help but feel like this is some new form of child abuse.

Unlike the Rebecca Black tune, which took off because of its innocent sweetness and fairly appealing musical hooks, this tune has no chance of replicating her success.

In other words, there's nothing to be thankful for.

Click on the video above to witness one Thanksgiving dinner which never should have made it to the table.

What do you think? Is Patrice Wilson exploiting kids and their families willing to put up the money for one of his insidious productions? Do you like this song?"

-------------------

PS: The irony to me in all of this "internet viral explosion" crap, is that for decades artists have railed against the record companies, overbearing obnoxious talent scouts, know nothing A & R men and the like, and to be sure the industry was rampant with people just looking to line their pockets. But now that the internet has rendered a lot of "the machine" obsolete, this is what we get. Not always of course, but a huge part of the time. Yeah, it's way cheaper and therefore easier to "self-publish" , but predictably, the loons come out of the woodwork, because hey, everyone wants to be, or wants their kid to be famous, right?

Carl: In this case, it truly was random. I was watching "Gangnam Style" for the tenth time and I noticed that it was listed as #1 on YouTube Top 100" or somesuch. So I hit THAT icon and was taken to a page I'd never visited before, covered with apparently multi-million-hit videos. Scrolling down as I blinked and tried to focus, I noticed that #1 on one of the sub-lists was the video above. I'd never heard of Nicole Westbrook, yet now she was apparently huge--an overnight sensation. So I clicked and got the video above. As I say, watching it makes me feel slightly unclean. I don't particularly enjoy making 12-year-old girls into focii of desire, yet that is what music videos are designed to do. I guess I'm just old school.........

Yes Rebecca Black's music sucks, but before anyone bashes this girl to the ground, I have to mention that she has actually taken philanthropic actions with her new fortune, at the age of 15.

This rocked up over 20 million hits before someone in the vid filed a complaint.

As a result of this vid, this song is one of my all time top 10 and a reminder that video and music, nostalgia and association are all one package.

The guy went on Chatroulette and performed this to each of his chat partners. This is the result. Enjoy the reactions!

Edit: And there are some really hot chicks of 'serviceable age' in this. I love the fact they're so into it all.

Sure, its not our cup of tea; but I don't think it deserves the level of scorn that we have put on it.

This is music for the youtube 'tweenie' generation of 10 to 13 year olds. They love it, and it exposes them to simple musical constructs that may later lead to a genuine interest in music. Its one step removed from Baa Baa black sheep. It is by all accounts very successful, and if its making a few people rich, well thats good ole free enterprise, the American way. Who are we to say that it is any less valid than what we are in to?

And as for turning twelve year olds into the focii of desire, I imagine (or at least hope) that the target audience is not middle aged bluesmen. Better that the prepubescent boys get their hard on's from this saccharin sweetness than from some of the other filth that they may be exposed to on the net.

Thank god they've got their own stuff, can you imagine how affronted we'd be if they tried to play blues?

And exactly how is this thread different from the Rachelle Plas videos, where some of our members were called sexist, other than the fact that Rachell is truly talented and plays harmonica
