I was amused to discover this Youtube a while back. we hadn't learned the tune yet so i consult lyric sheet OFTEN!;-)heh, heh. i quit smoking and discovered 1/2 an octave vocally.
no harp content. there are many tunes i do w/out playing harp at all so as not to saturate the audience. the harp is not like a guitar where people don't tire of it. the harps voice is so unique that it sticks out like a violin or something. this is fortunate and unfortunate at the same time. If want to make the harp really count i think there are many times that one must use it sparingly. oh well. cheers! Mark

I agree. Way too many singers in my band and I'm afraid the harp is over used. But often as accompaniment, rather than lead, so I think (hope) it blends more often than stands out. P6vxa6 ----------
Hi Mark, I thought that was great, the wisdom in this statement is even greater: the harps voice is so unique that it sticks out like a violin or something. this is fortunate and unfortunate at the same time. If one wants to make the harp really count i think there are many times that one must use it sparingly.

yeah, soul tunes can use harp sparingly as in horn parts but this tune, being in B would be awful w/ 2nd pos harp. merely passable w/ 1st, and kinda/sorta ok in 3rd. i'm only talking about my own skill level here.
i just feel this tune needs to be a harmonica free zone.

On tunes like this, horn lines groove more, and for harp players, NEVER play a warble in these grooves because they sound and feel totally out of place. Many of these grooves like this really don't need a solo, just nothing but a tight, solid groove and good vocals. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
remember tyrone davis doing that one about the same time joe simon did choking kind....heard them on John R WLAC nashville...about the time uncle sam snatched me up...brings back memories...
Nice,MP! Here in Pittsburgh, this song has been covered by many bands. Most Pittsburghers don't know the original version but this one:
Billy Price is Pittsburgh's premier soul/R&B vocalist. He's gotten rave reviews in Rolling Stone & Blues Revue, but never really managed to break out.
I once asked Buddha how he would approach this song on harp. He was not familiar with it,but really liked it and wanted to do it. The really funny part was Buddha saying"I know that bass player". Sure enough,it was a guy he played with in Ariz. He had good ears.
Buddha thought it would be good in 12th pos. I could never get a handle on it in 12th. I try to do the organ part in 2nd on a low F.It doesn't work well on a regular F.

what i'm not understanding is that this is the first time i've ever not liked a roy buchanan solo. it takes away from that awesome vocal and makes it another song entirely. like this ain't no soul groove no more. it's like soft jazz or something. then the singer has to come back in punching rather than being supported. (sigh)

Roy Buchanan "Livestock" was for me one of the greatest albums of the 70's. I often wondered what happened to Billy Price and why Roy didn't hang on to him. ---------- Most wisdom I've seen written on a harp forum ever: "The harps voice is so unique that it sticks out like a violin or something. Song makes me wonder if Los Lonely Boys listened to it a few times on the Texas back roads between gigs. High string vamp reminds me a bit of their song Heaven. ---------- Greg Jones 16:23 Custom Harmonicas greg@1623customharmonicas.com 1623customharmonicas.com
Mark- I'm so used to that version that I can't look at that solo unbiased. Our guitarist thinks it's one of the best guitar solos ever.
Billy Price is still active here. He doesn't do anywhere near the number of gigs he used to do. Still, whenever he does play,he packs the house. I think his day job is a computer programmer at Carnegie Mellon.

it's still a great vocal and buchanans comping through the bulk of the song is excellent.
you know, Walter Wolfman Washington covers this tune. i've heard quite a few versions by other people but can't remember the artists. Mark ---------- MP affordable reed replacement and repairs.
