I just bought a 1948 Magnatone Troubadour M-192-5-S amp. Just seemed like a cool amp. The tube compliment is:

M-192-5
M-192-5-S 6SN7 6N7 6V6(2) 5Y3 12" lower chassis, 1948

It is a Class AB push pull I believe. It is fairly clean
sounding and the adjustment point it sounds the best is when the master volume is at Max and I turn the tone knob just to the point that the highs kick in abit. It is almost like the tone control bleeds off alot of volume when almost off and turning the tone to get more highs really increases the volume alot. So there is one setting that is great. max master volume and a touch of tone. Does this sound like a normal adjustment? I am wondering if the amp needs some service as the tubes look to be original? It is quiet and has no humming. It also has the 2 prong plug which I already got a minor shock when holding the mic and going to touch a metal mic stand on my desk.

Now, can I substitute the preamp for something with more gain to experiment? I am not familiar with a 6SN7 although the gain for this tube is 20 whitch is fairly low.

Thanks Rick
The other cool thing is the cabinet is made so that it actually tilts back some when sitting flat and I love 12 inch speakers. :)

528hemi,
I have a similar old Maggie, a '49 M195-4-J Melodier with a similar tube line-up. I would definitely have a 3-prong power cord installed; cheap, and any amp tech can do it.

Regarding the 6SN7 preamp tube, I love the tone of this and the other old octal (8-pin) tubes. A 6SL7 can be directly subbed for your 6SN7, and will give more gain.

6SN7 gain = 20

6SL7 gain = 70

Thanks Bloozefish...The tone is nice but figured I see what more gain does.

Yes to the 3 prong chord.

Do you find you can turn your amp volume to max and then just raise the tone until it sounds good which is not much before the highs and feedback kick in? Seems there is one sweet spot. I find that is the best way to set this amp.

Now that is a cool amp! I too really like 12" speakers for harp. I just love how they break up so smooth.
