I've been wanting to try the Electro Harmonix 44 Magnum amp and I finally ordered one to evaluate. Since it has the pedal form factor I mounted it on my pedal board.

So far I've only played it for a half hour, with zero effects. I had my Silver Bullet mic plugged straight into the 44 Mag, driving a stock Epi Valve Jr. cab with the Lady Luck speaker.

This thing rocks. It is loud with good tone, even a bit of crunch. I was in a small room standing right next to the speaker, so feedback was a bit of an issue, but no more of a problem than with small tube amps. I had the tone switch set to Normal (not Bright).

Tomorrow I'll play it with the pedals: Kinder AFB+ anti-feedback, MXR Carbon Copy analog delay, Boss EQ pedal, and the BBE Sonic Stomp. I'm pretty sure I can get a giggable sound out of this thing.

The rectangular box you see next to the 44 Mag (above the Pedal Power) is the power supply. The 44 Mag has to use it's own power supply; it draws too much current for the VooDoo Lab Pedal Power 2+.

I think the purpose of the 44 Mag is as a backup amp. If the Bassman craps out I can hook the 44 Mag up to one of the Lil Buddy speakers and keep playing. The speaker load has to be 8 or 16 ohms, so it cannot drive the 2 ohm load of the four tens as they are wired in the Bassman.

Or, if it sounds good enough and I want to travel light, I can bring the pedal board and a cab to the gig and have at it.

I'll shoot some video and post it in a few day. More later...

Rick, I am glad you went ahead and got one. They are a great backup amp, or a lightweight amp for sitting in. With a 10" Lil' Buddy, you can get pretty damn loud and sound pretty good.

I had hoped to get around to shooting and posting video of my use of the 44 Magnum, but I haven't had the time due to home repair projects, practicing playing and singing new non-blues material to be ready to play with an acoustic band that gigs a lot, and doing minor harp repairs to be ready for the next gig. The band knows so much material that I do not, and I am struggling to be adequate at gigs.

Have you tried the 44 Magnum with a Lil' Buddy yet? I tried it with a number of speakers and mics, and it worked best for me with the least feedback with the Lil' Buddy and my SM585SAV. An SM57 with transformer worked pretty well, too. I think the dark tone of the Lil' Buddy helped reduce feedback. I have never used a Lady Luck speaker, so I can't compare.

My Mexican 520 green bullet and my ceramic biscuit were each subject to feedback issues that only improved with some EQ adjustment and output cut. I could not reach the volume levels I could with the other "clean" mics.

The 44 Magnum sounded best to me when I could get the volume set at about 2:00, which is pretty loud and risking feedback. I used the amp some at Bean Blossom, but didn't open it up due to volume issues around night time jams. It sounded OK used that way, but not like when it is turned up.

I would still prefer one of my tube amps for a regular gig, but I think it is a cool little amp!

Please keep posting about your experiences with this little powerhouse solid state Class D amp.

Doug, I am a big fan of the Emi Lil Buddy speaker for harp. I haven't tried that yet but I surely will.

Thanks for recommending the 44 Magnum; that is a big reason I decided to try it. Same as you, I see it as a great backup amp.
