After a very successful 2012 Hill Country Harmonica and a great three-year run in the direction of expanding and optimizing the event, Jeff Silverman and I have decided to take a one-year hiatus in 2013. HCH will NOT occur in 2013.

But we will return in May 2014--we're both committed to that--and we're looking forward to it.

The event is a lot of work. It's fun as hell, and satisfying, but neither of us intended to enslave ourselves to the production schedule of an annual event. We are breathing a sigh of relief.

But there's more!

Jeff and I are both planning to attend SPAH in St. Louis in August 2013, and we're currently evaluating ways of potentially making the event a forum for a mini-HCH reunion. This might include a show featuring some of HCH past stars (Jason, Jimi Lee, Deak, Brandon, Todd, etc.) and/or a cocktail hour or other reunion for past HCH attendees who will be attending SPAH already or who might consider coming to SPAH in part to attend such an event.

We'll keep you posted. We're hoping to make some sort of announcement about SPAH by year's end or just after the New Year.

Jeff and I are delighted to have created one of the largest all-blues-harmonica teaching events on the annual calendar. We are proud as hell of our cumulative list of teacher/performers, which includes (and I'm sure I've forgotten somebody, but these are the people, as far as I know, who were officially invited and received some form of compensation from us):

Billy Branch & Sons of Blues
Sugar Blue
Jason Ricci
Phil Wiggins
Mitch Kashmar
Satan & Adam
Billy Gibson
Charlie Sayles
Dr. Robert "Feel Good" Potts
Terry "Harmonica" Bean
Johnny Sansone
Jimi Lee
Bill "Howl-N-Madd" Perry and his family band
Brandon Bailey
Deak Harp
Sonny Boy Terry
Todd Parrott
Charlie Hilbert
Andrew "Shine" Turner
P.T. Gazell
Annie Raines
Scott Albert Johnson
Greg Heumann (amps/mics)
Randy Landry (effects pedals)
Wayne Snyder (tabbing)

You may rest assured: we will be back in 2014, and it will be big fun.

I had planned on attending both HCH and SPAH in 2013, so I am a little disappointed in the delay until 2014 for HCH IV.

However, given the extraordinary amount of work that goes into HCH on Jeff's and your part while you continue your other regular activities, I totally understand your decisions.

See you at SPAH! Hopefully also at HCH in 2014.

Dammit, Adam...so I log on today and see this topic headliner and before my brain could even register thought, I felt my heart jumping into my throat, and then....the bottom fell out. As if I didn't kick myself in the ass too many times for missing this year! Now this! aaaaaargh!
Not being involved with the innermost workings as you and Jeff are, it's easy to feel the disappointment, but on the other hand, as dougharps stated, I understand the 'why's'...and am OK with it too.
REST ASSURED that I WILL be attending in 2014 if I have to start walking towards the ranch the 1st of May. Additionally, I'd LOVE to go to SPAH and @ STL, that's a doable distance, for a change. Thanks for all that you have put together Adam, enjoy the break, work on some new tunes, take the wife and child on a vacay, whatever it is you do. We'll see you around.

Well, after falling off of my chair, I guess I am resigned to fate. I can most certainly understand that this event is a huge production - which is why I love it so much.

I will miss all of you guys in 2013. I'll miss Mississippi and all the other stuff that goes with this trip. I have had some great adventures going and coming from HCH that has made it an even richer experience.

Now I just have to convince everybody to hold that time spot so I can go in 2014. After 3 in a row, it is now assumed that is where I will be in May.

On the plus side, St. Louis is just a hop away from Indianapolis. I've never been to one, so it could be a fair trade off, particularly faced with the choice of nothing or SPAH.

Adam, I can't express how much I have appreciated and do appreciate what you and Jeff have done to bring us HCH. They have been magnificent! I have enjoyed them more than you could know.

Thanks, and I look forward to 2014!

never been to SPAH, obad?
you are in store for a life changing experience.
slightly more than HCH with lots more seminars, multiple jams breaking out faster than cockroaches in a new york apartment and a whole lot of good folk.
(not to say there aint good folk or a few jams at HCH!)

but the trade off is the money you spend on room and board. you can always sleep somewhere cheaper, but you will miss things. the best option is to share a room with 3 or 4 other HCH alumni; some will sleep on the floor (just like camping) but you aint sleeping that much.
as for the food- bring a cooler and eat sandwiches!

oh. then there is the money you will spend on harps and shirts and gear and...

I'm bummed, but not because of the understandable decision you very busy, committed guys had to make. I'm bummed because, while I went to HCH1 & HCH2, I missed HCH3, so by the time HCH4 comes around in '14, it'll be 3 years since I was at Foxfire enjoying every single minute and all the company of you harpmaniacs.
That said, short of a crisis, I'll be down in Waterford then -- maybe I should make my Le Brooks Inn reservation right now :-)
I have many great, unforgettable, inspiring memories like those of you who have already posted. The one that I'll never forget was at the end of HCH1, which didn't have the on-stage opportunities for every harp player that the following two had.
Maybe the root of those latter opportunities was planted very late that last night. Probably after 11 p.m. on Sunday, Billy Branch and the band started playing Help Me (did he have Bill Perry backing him? -- I'll have to check my photos). Awesome. Would've been a great way to end a great weekend by itself. But, while the groove continued, Billy said he wasn't going anywhere and he wanted all of us to line up to blow some blues along with him. So about 40 or 50 of us that were still there got right on that line and every 12 bars Billy handed another one of us the mic to give it a shot. I have no memory of how or what I played. I just remember the joy and ecstasy of having done something insanely joyful. I'm pretty sure that groove went on for like 50 minutes and several hundred bars of Sonny Boy's best.
Jeff Silverman put it best just before a bunch of us were about to head off to our tents or cars.
“That was like having Jesus perform your baptism or Moses showing up for your Bar Mitzvah,” he said.
And so it was ….
See you all back at the hallowed ground in 2014. Can't wait.

I attended all 3 HC events. I was going to take a break in 2013 anyway, so 2014 sounds good to me.
