I was born in Nuremberg, Germany (Dad was in the army then), but I've lived in Austin, Texas (musician's paradise) since I was 5 years old. I have to shout out to Adam Gussow. I had almost given up on my dream of being a musician that I had all my life. I played rhythm guitar and a little cross harp in a pop band briefly in the 90's but considered myself a hack and comic relief. By January 2008, I rarely played, thought i sucked, and blamed my wife for giving up on my dreams.

I discovered Adam's youtube series by accident when I was doing some hurricane repair away from home. His videos became my home away from home. I bought a Bb and started woodshedding and free playing like a mofo. With all of this came this epiphany: The harp is my musical voice!

I play all the time, while driving, while at home, sometimes even on the job!(i'm a contractor).

I don't care if I suck now (I don't), the harp is my voice and i'm here for life. After woodshedding I "came out" at a talent show for an organization that had about 200 attendees dry into a mic. I've done a wedding, play jams, and accompany a singer songwriter here in Austin. I'll play anything from blues to country to punk. I even do a version of "Tainted Love".

Thank you Adam Gussow and the wonderful community you have built. I look forward to seeing y'all around.

Hey, first post from me so hi to you all.

I'm from Brighton in the U.K. and we are deep in snow - which doesn't come often so the country grinds to a halt - which is nice!

I'm in Victoria BC on the we(s)t coast of Canada. Being happily retired gives me the time and flexibility to enjoy this wonderful 10 hole instrument.

Thanks for this opportunity to share and learn, Adam!!

New member checking in from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
I'm a chef who lives and works near downtown.

Born out west in Edmonton, Alberta.

Raw beginner, but I've loved the blues for a long time. I was lucky enough to see Muddy in 1983, just before he died I believe. Took a road trip to Cleveland to see Jason Ricci and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last summer.

Welcome everyone!

LilWillieB- The funniest movie quote I ever saw was about Toronto.

Boomer: There it is, men. Toronto.
Roy Boy: It's beautiful. Like no other city I've ever seen. It's like Albany. Only cleaner.

(I live in Albany.) I only have ever been to Toronto once. Very nice city.

Ha, Ha! What movie is that from, Canadian Bacon maybe?

I remember when The Simpsons came to Toronto and Marge says "It's so clean and bland, I'm home!"

In reality, it's an amazingly multicultural city with great restaurants, museums, live theatre and music. Now if our sports teams could just do better.

BTW, did you know that Lonnie Johnson lived here later in his life and, in fact, died here? I just found that out recently.

Yeap, that's Canadian Bacon.

My trip to Toronto was with a college choir. We also stopped on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. When dinner time came around we broke up into little groups and went wandering off to different restaurants. We found a small sit down pizza place and ordered. We were all 18-19. A few of us were going to take advantage of the lower drinking age to try some wine, but just then the choir director walked into ours. Out of all the gin joints in Niagara Falls, he walked into ours.

Welcome, all newbies, to the Wild West. I'm the sheriff, when They force me to be.

Glad to know that some of my Russian brothers are members of this forum. For the record, my paternal grandfather, Don Gussow (Hyman Donald Gussow), was born in Pumpian, Lithuania (Pumpanos, Pumpenaii) and one of my great grandfathers, Samuel (Simcha) Gussow, was a tailor to the Russian imperial court, or so they say. He was called "the man with the golden hands." His sewing machine, pedal operated, sits in our family's summer house up in Maine. My grandfather grew up in a dirt-floored shack in a Jewish shetl, which is what Pumpian was. My branch of the Gussows has roots in Kharkov.

Wassup? My name is Victor and I'm from deep south Texas. I live like 7 miles from the border. I was a migrant farmworker growing up and lived in Fargo, North Dakota for the summers. I've been playing punk and metal since I was 15, I'm going to be 40 soon. Just a couple of years ago I finally grew up and started playing blues... hahaha.

I play a Dobro in open G with a harmonica rack. I've only been playing harp for like 2 years. I played Blues On The Hill in Harlingen, Texas this past summer. Check it...

Hi all,

I'm from the dusty hinterlands of Southern California, known as the "Inland Empire." I was born in a town called Hemet, currently live in an unincorporated area near the town of Menifee, and work in the city of Riverside.

I started my harmonica learning process one year ago, with Jon Gindick's book and YouTube.

I've been reading this forum for months, but just signed up yesterday. I was poised to say something nice about how refreshing it was to see intense discussions conducted with courtesy and collegiality (on the Internet, yet!)-- just as a flaming sack of reality comes roaring through. Perfect timing, Mr. Chopper.

Anyway, *in general*, this forum has a really great vibe. I've enjoyed reading the threads here, and I've already learned a tremendous amount from you guys. Looking forward to participating a little more directly now.

Regards,
Dave

KC69,

Lots of relocated Buckeyes in the area. If they're music fans, tell them to look for "Treat for Shock". It's a rock / blues / country band that I play some harp in. We play the local club scene, normally doing two to three gigs per month.

Born, raised, and currently reside on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Just picked up the harp this summer, and Adam's YouTube videos and lessons have been educational and inspirational. Having a wife and 3 young daughters, I really enjoy my time in the woodshed.

Looking forward to a long journey of triumphs and frustrations trying to learn this thing.

I'm a Gulfport native, btw. Click on my profile name for my email if you wish to contact me about the club. Welcome aboard to you and Dunnigan!

Born and raised until 17 in Plymouth,Ma. Hit the road at 17, ended up in Winchester,Va.,been here ever since!Met my wife here, raised 5 kids,(3 down, two to go,and end in site!)And love it here. All my friends up north call me S.F.,Southern Fried or something a bit more Blue! I gotta say, I've learned a lot here in a short time. And I needed it to! I never considered my self a serious Harp player, until I unwittingly got my self in a band! Then it was do or look let every one down,so my casual jamming to what ever I wanted became every night to stuff I might not have chosen, and playing it right! But I'm really loving it,just wish I had taken the past ten years of foolin' around on the harp way more seriously!HaHa!! Well any ways maybe I'll see y'all at the Hill Country Harmonica Jam,I'm planning on attending!!

My name is Boris Plotnikov I was born and live in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
I'm mostly jazz player. I play both diatonic and chromatic, but prefer diatonic. I customize harmonicas for myself, and use overblow technique and chromatic possibilities of diatonic harmonica. Sometimes I use a lot of stompboxes to allow harp to sound like a guitar or organ or any strange sound. I play with jazz big band, jazz-rap band Vinnebago and some gigs with other musicians (blues, rock, pop).

I was born in Liberchies, Pont-à-Celles, Belgium, to gypsy parents who had me while migrating in a caravan. My gypsy nickname was Romani for "I awake." I spent most of my youth in gypsy encampments close to Paris, playing banjo, guitar and violin from an early age and professionally in burlesque halls in Paris.
An unfortunate accident and the subsequent year long recovery forced my parents to send me to live with some relatives in Tennessee. The fresh air and sunshine did me well and I was up and around and chasing the local critters in no time. One day my Uncle "Jay" went shopping Ozark style in the back yard and somehow when he came back our lives had changed drastically and we were on the move again. He had come into some oil, so we loaded up the truck and moved to...

(Oh sh*t… that’s Django Reinhardt and Elly Mae Clampett….)

Me, I’m from Green Brook, New Jersey... Smaller hills... bigger opossum...!
