Originally from Brooklyn, NY, now in Long Island. Started playing blues harp in the mid 1990s.

I used to go to Manny's Car Wash a lot, and Chicago Blues. Saw a lot of great harp players at Manny's...Sugar Blue, John Popper, William Clarke, Little Mike, James Cotton, etc. Used to leave that club with my ears ringing and a grin on my face.

Also saw Satan & Adam playing on the street one day in the late 1990s...I went up to Adam said hello all star struck. LOL :-)

I stopped playing for a long time, and am now trying to get back into it, and get decent tone & skills.

Hello, I'm Fabrizio, harmonica, bass & slide guitar player from Italy. Originally from Southern Italy, I now live in Turin, in the North, where I play live mostly as a one man band, teach harmonica and bass, study philosophy and double bass, and usually do the busker traveling around. I stumbled here because of a video posted here with me and my father, also a very good harmonica player. If you want to check us out, on youtube:

Bad Chili, Heavy Blues Band

Light Chili, electro-acoustic Blues duo

Fabrizio Canale, One Man Band Blues

Have a good karma!

Well I guess I may as well introduce myself. I'm Dan and I live near Ann Arbor, Mi...great town for music. I used to go to the Blues and Jazz festivals back in the early '70s and have seen a lot of great music around here since.
A buddy showed me how to bend and play cross harp when I was 17 and I just mimicked stuff I heard and played a bit in local bands, handling lead vocals mostly and the harmonica was not as much a focal point. It wasn't too difficult to copy Yardbirds, Stones etc.
Then I saw Peter "Madcat" Ruth and my little mind was blown, figured I may as well just hang up my harps!
Well in fact I did, when family, work, bikes and what have you began to take up all my time.
So now here I am 59 years old and semi-retired and have gotten into jamming with my old band mates from back in the day, another band of "kids" half my age and another guitar player where we do a duo act.
For the first time I am taking the harmonica seriously, practicing, picking up stuff from the various you tubers (thanks Jason Ricci and Adam Gussow!!) and acquiring some gear (just bought a '51 Gibson BR-6F!).
So I just wanted so say Hi and how much I'm enjoying the forum here.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut. 1960.
Raised in a white-bread suburb of Boston.
Introduced to the blues by The J. Geils Band.
Started playing in high school, trying to copy Whammer Jammer.
Begged my way on stage with a couple dozen rock and country bands.
Found out a little more listening to the Blues Brothers.

In college, though I only had an inkling about who they were, got to see live Muddy, James Cotton, Koko Taylor, Albert King, and JB Hutto in tiny clubs around Amherst Massachusetts in the early-80's.

Moved to NYC in the late 80's and hacked my way through open mic nights at Chicago Blues just down the street from my apartment. Got to see Kim Wilson, Cab Calloway, Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bonnie Raitt as they cruised through town. Missed a LOT of shows.

Studied harp with a player named Bob Shatkin at the New school of Social Research in Manhattan where my real introduction to harmonica began. Bob was a classic country and Chicago blues player. He taught four or five of us at a time, face to face, and gave us names of harp players that really set the foundation of the blues. Until then, I had never even heard of Little or Big Walter. Bob was a hard guy, and cut our heads every week. And it made a big difference in our playing.

Spent two semesters with him learning how to bend, tongue-block, syncopate, and finally carry 12-bars with a little authority. No style, but some authority.

It still took ten years to get into a solid band, Walk That Walk, outside of Boston in 2000. . We backed up Bo Diddley a half dozen times at the original House of Blues in Cambridge, and Johnnie Johnson, Chuck Berry's keyboard player in a couple more venues. That's our claim to fame.

walkthatwalk.org

In a month I come full-circle. Playing a gig with Danny Klein, the bassist from J. Geils. Only took 40 years to get on stage with him.

Hi, I'm Carsick Phil from Cambridge, UK. I'm learning the harmonica and finding it fascinating. My brother gave me a Hohner Pocket Pal along with a nice little book by Grindick years ago, but it is only recently that I've really started to learn properly. Loads of great material available across youtube and elsewhere. Adam's is among the very best. Cheers, Phil

Mid life crisis, ageing hippy, suddenly found more time on my hands. Any or all of those lead me to finally buying a real grown up harp after years of pressing my nose up against music store windows.Actually the defining moment was when the wife bought me a kids one(as a joke)& i spent all Xmas howling the house down before i thought'Harps , they are the future'.
Now my evenings are spent trawling you tube & reading this forum.Pure class.
The Barnsley,England branch is now open for business.
P.S.The wife says i have improved immeasurably over the last 6 months but i think she is wanting me to buy her a new hat for the daughters wedding.

Born and raised in Scranton, PA.

After finishing college, I needed to travel and spent a year teaching English in Japan.

Moved back to the States. Lived three years in Savannah, Georgia, then moved to California. We've been living in San Jose for the past year, and I've been playing harp since about November 2012. The Bay Area seems like a good spot for blues, actually.

Hello, folks. I'm Kyle. Grew up in Crystal Springs, MS and I've migrated all the way to Terry, MS. About 10 miles.

Been playing harp since college in the late 80's, but had a long dry spell during which I rarely played. I got the urge to play again a few months ago and have been working hard to make up for lost time. I even got the nerve to play in public not long ago. It was more fun than I could have imagined.

Born and bred in Swansea South Wales UK, visited the harp a few times in the past, didn't stick it for longer than a month, believed the bullshit that it was an easy instrument to play and got disillusioned now this time I am hooked, I know it takes dedication, practice and time, I am really loving my harp journey and can't wait to put it to my lips and play, I am 4 months in, so still a beginner, this time its for life

G'day everyone
I have to confess I put down the harps for a few years, prior to that I was a pretty competent player doing the rounds in bands and fill ins for other harp players. I pretty much stopped when my daughter was born 17 years ago. Shoot forwards to four months ago and I came home to find a fender jazz bass and an ampeg amp with a post-it note saying learn this on the grill. It had been left there by a drummer mate who has been whinging about the lack of bass players in town. This has reinvigorated my interest in music and at our first gig I also dusted off the harp bag, plugged the bullet into the bass amp and let rip.
I felt I had two left lips and couldn't remember a lot of my licks but I could still get an acceptable tone.

Now I am hungry to get back to the standard is played at and to improve beyond this. My biggest goal is to get competent with tongue blocking. I taught myself by playing along to Little Walter and Sonnyboy Williams in the car. There was no internet then so I puckered and played. Now when I heard about the technique and had a crack I realised this was why I often didn't get the sound right.

Anyway this seems to have the semblance of a grandpa Simpson rant so I will leave off with a hello from outback South Australia

I was born in Stuttgart, south-Germany 1989, so I'm kind of the new breed of harmonica-players. I play the Harp for about two years now. I also play the Guitar and Banjo. Now I live in Vienna to study Musicology and I never want to move away from this town!

I don't know why, but I never actually met someone who plays the harmonica. I don't know if it's different in America but it seems like noone plays the harp where i come from. I know a few people who play the guitar and blow into the harmonica sometimes but noone here really plays it as a solo instrument. I guess most of the people think about the harp as a toy to have fun with a couple of days then leave it in the drawer forever. It kind of represents the way some people treat their girlfriends but that's another story.

I got into harmonica-playing by listening to Tom Waits records and i wondered what that sounds was for example in chocolate jesus from the mule variations album. Then i found out it was charlie musselwhite on the harp and I was shocked. I never knew you could make a harmonica sound like this. So, yeah, that's why i bought my first harmonica. After that i spend one year wondering what to do untill I asked in a Tom Waits Forum how Musslewhite is doing this stuff, if he had a special harmonica ore something like that. Then someone told me about "cross-harp". That was the moment i really startet to learn how to play the instrument. That was 2 years ago and now I'm about to join my first band for a couple of songs as a harmonica-player. I hope I don't suck too much. (my god, what a funny joke)

Born and raised in western upstate New York.
Went to school in northern New York (almost near Canadian border)
Lived in southern Ohio and also near Detroit Michigan.
Now in Waukesha Wisconsin (birthplace of Les Paul)

Played sax for many years in my youth. Then decided to try the harmonica back in my early thirties. Always still much to learn, not giving up my day job anytime soon.

I play solo sometimes, but also have a blues guitarist from work that I play with as well. Our duo is called Midnight Special.
