Hi. I have been lurking a bit, thanks for so much info. I play guitar and piano. I finally am getting serious with harp, but still sound like a beginner.

I just retuned my Big River to True Chromatic. I am learning the new layout. Does anyone work with more than one tuning ? Is it too confusing ? Or do you just pick one and go with it ?

Personally, I would stick with one tuning for a while.

However, you are a piano player, and that can make a big difference in your understanding of the harp and alternate turnings.

It also depends on what type of music you plan on playing most of the time.

I use more than one tuning--harmonicas are usually tuned to chords (so that adjacent tones sound good together), so it isn't too hard if you can remember the chords.
I don't use True tho . . .

Lots of us use more than one tuning. Starting out, it might make sense to stick with one for while.

The question is what kind of music do you want to make? How much control do you have over what keys of music you get to play? (are you in a band where others choose the key?)

You're not going to be able to play a lot of blues licks and effects on a True Chromatic, but there will be other melodies and chords that that tuning makes possible.

Mostly modern jazz. Post-bop type stuff. I didn't even think it would be possible until I saw Sebastian Charlier do it on YouTube. I will probably always need a Richter around when attempting blues.

I have a lot of control; first I ask nicely, then I throw a fit. Then I threaten to play the harmonica.

Actually since I mostly play by myself it is not a problem.

Since I am kind of starting out I thought it might be good to try a few tunings before jumping in heavily to one. At the moment I have an excellent Sydel session in Richter complete with OBs and ODs (thanks to 1623), and this Big River in True Chromatic with just 4 or 5 OBs (no ODs).

Seems like improvising would be the real challenge when you play with more that one tuning.

I guess I use three tunings, but they are simple ones- standard Richter, Natural Minor, and Solo (on my tremolos). I mainly play in 1st and second, although I play some minor stuff in 3rd and 5th. I was alternating between Solo and Richter at the start and it didn't seem to cause too much problem, although those are pretty close.
