Im going into the studio this Sat, for the 1st time,A friend who has the Band (Rainwater),Got in touch with me this week,Ive done a few gigs with him but not in awhile, and everytime i have to play songs on the spot,(I hate that but most times he gets the gig and calls me out of the blue)I tell him that theres way better players out there but he seems to dig what I do(I work cheap;-),But they have allways been live gigs where no one is recording,I havent even tried to play harp by itself, without a rack in over 6 months,Ive been trying to work on my 1man band and guitar and was trying to use as little as harp as possible,Now we have a decent gig in 2 weeks called Hawg waller its a biker fund raiser for Autism,And theres a few cool bands playing,I wasnt to worried about the gig, cause we might get a practice in and we just have fun playing live,But he says he wants me to go in the studio Sat,and add some stuff to a few songs,I was like are you sure and he says yes,Im afraid if I dont take the opurtunity it wont be offered again so Im going to,But ill have to play to songs that i havent heard yet,And im kind of nervouse,I was wanting to use my rp155 ,Im ordering the hunter harmonica patches tomorow,I have been using it with my small 60 watt PA sometimes with my superchamp xd running into it 1st then the PA sometimes the rp155 direct.Im not sure what would be the best bet,To take,Im driving up there in my truck Ill have room for the gear,Im just not sure what setup would work best, and looking for ideas to think about,I know My harps need a good cleaning and make sure there tuned up.But other than that and woodshedding the next 3 days with the patches and setups to get a better idea what works,But Im not sure if I have access to any music he's wrote untill i hear it a couple times in the studio.Im totally out of my area, but it should be interesting.Like I said any tips greatly apreaciated thanks

First, see if they can send you demos to work from. It could be anything from a band rehearsal to just an acoustic and vocals. The idea is to simply get in your head some idea what the song is about as opposed to no idea. If there are no recordings not to worry. You've been dropped in it loads of times and nobody died.

Second, you want to be as comfortable as possible. I'd stick with the gear and patches you know, unless you find something amazing in the new lot. You don't want to have to be thinking about how to make something new work on top of everything else.

Normally, one would be asking the producer or artist to give you an idea of what they want. Acoustic or amped for example. In your case the artist likes what you do naturally. He wants you there because he likes what he's heard from you, so just give him that. Easy, huh?

Choosing between direct to desk or through the Champ first is also easy. Try them both and see what the consensus is. It may be you'll use a different set up for different songs.

The engineer should know anyway but just check that he/she is pushing the red button even if you're just running through for practice. Oft times that is the best performance. If you get a take and everybody thinks its wonderful but you think you can do a better one tell them. Live is for the moment. Recording is forever. They can always keep the first and simply use another track for the next. They can even take pieces of each take to create best of both.

Be warned, the studio is the most wonderful place in the world next to a stage in front of a load of people. It is equally as addicting and way too much fun to be legal.

Sound advice from LSC. Two thoughts...

1. Time is money. Don't waste time.

2. Overplay. They can mute/cut/copy/paste in post production. Give them plenty to work with (but not using a zillion takes).

I got most my stuff here last few months the rp155 the superchamp xd and the PA.Ive really havent done much playing miked though any of it,I have set up 4 patches ,For harp but there so so I guess,Ive not used them much,But they seem to not feed back as much as the factory settings,Each time ive played a gig with him I used a different setup, trying to find something that worked on my budget,I used 2 small amps and that wasnt the best setup cause they wasnt very good amps,And Ive played acoustically into his PA a couple times worked somewhat ok,But was needing a more biker bar harp miked sound,I have ran my bullet into his PA,But this time I feel like i got the best setup Ive had,Its a 60 wat PA 2 10'S and the rp155,I have put the superchamp in between befor giving one more 10 but I havent ever used this setup besides what ive been playing around the house.I firgure Ill just hopefully find a couple patches that I like and try to keep it simple,Im not sure though for a studio what i should bring,Like I said with this new setup Ive have very little time with and hasnt been taken from the house.I like your advise and will put it to good use, thanks

By overplay, if Mike means play over more of the song than you otherwise might, I agree. That's easy to edit out. If he means play more notes per beat, then I strongly disagree.

i would go in with all my harps in working order and bring my rig. they may just want some harp tracks on what they already have done so you may just be blowing toward a big condenser mic. a good engineer can take "dry" tracks and add any number of effects to them where needed.
i've done it both ways. slap on phones and just play to whatever tracks come through the phones. conversely- and i like this better- just going all live, raw, and real. re-take if necessary but capture the real deal without a lot of punching stuff in.
sounds like in your case you'll be on headphones just sort of fitting in to stuff that's already recorded. i think you will do fine on this regardless of what you've been focused on lately, in fact getting out of your usual groove may have some cool surprises in store.
