All harmonica players have to have a train song. It's the LAW. (That's what I tell people anyway.)

there sure are a lot of them.
probably because train travel back then could be had for free by anybody that could hop a boxcar.

Do you believe it's possible to imitate a train sound with another instrument than diatonic harp?

a slow one referring to trains but not a chugger is, "love in vain" by robert johnson. good for hypnotizing an audience with slower dynamics. we do it in G and i use a low F harp. it has flat killed sometimes.

I saw once an interview of Little Richard, he said that the rythm he used in his songs came directly from the sound of train.

You can surely imitate trains with a guitar or a banjo, but I have no example right now.

The little 4 whistle wooden whistles they sell at most train museums do a credible immitaion of a train.

I have a Santa Fe caboose in my back yard. It has a whistle on each end. The whistles are made from pipe elements you could buy at home depot. Actuation is with a ball valve just below the whistle.

A player in my band can use his guitar to make a pretty good train whistle chord.

The whistle sound is certainly important in the imitation; I suppose the most credible imitation from start to stop the machine's move will come from a wind instrument, don't you think?
Yeah, maybe drums also, but whisteling with a drum? I scratch my skull...

doug- that reminds me of a local, i think he's local, that plays harp and guitar, sometimes together.
he does a train song with a dobro and gets real close to train sounding. doesnt get the whistle but he gets the bell that old trains had.

his name is robert jones. used to be a dj on npr for their blues hour. played/taught in lots of places. gave up the dj gig and became a reverend. but continues testifyin' about the blues.
i dont suppose anyone else heard of him, huh?

We usually use it at the end of a set, too. Good high energy song. It is good if you already have them dancing and then go right into Night Train.
